Turan, Emrah
In the present study, transient flow analyses of a long oil pipeline are performed. Transient flow conditions are initiated by typical valve operations and pump trips that may be expected during operation of such pipelines. In order to simulate transient events an existing computer program called “Stoner Pipeline Simulator” has been used for a large number of hydraulic transient conditions. The program is based on the characteristics method solution of the governing water hammer equations. Locations that may be subject to surge pressures of high magnitudes, even exceeding maximum allowable pressure limit have been determined by the program. In the present study, a number of measures to control and preferably to avoid these undesirable surge pressures are also covered. Guidelines for safe operation of the pipeline are developed and suggested for the use of technical personnel.

Analysis of mechanical behavior of high performance cement based composite slabs under impact loading
Satıoğlu, Azize Ceren; Gülkan, Polat; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
Studies on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and slurry infiltrated fibrous concrete (SIFCON) to impact loading have started in recent years. Using these relatively new materials, higher values of tensile and compressive strength can be obtained with greater fracture toughness and energy absorption capacity, and therefore they carry a considerable importance in the design of protective structures. In this thesis, computational analyses concerning impact loading effect on concrete, steel...
Comprehensive modelling of gas condensate relative permeability and its influence on field performance
Çalışgan, Hüseyin; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2005)
The productivity of most gas condensate wells is reduced significantly due to condensate banking when the bottom hole pressure falls below the dew point. The liquid drop-out in these very high rate gas wells may lead to low recovery problems. The most important parameter for determining condensate well productivity is the effective gas permeability in the near wellbore region, where very high velocities can occur. An understanding of the characteristics of the high-velocity gas-condensate flow and relative ...
Active microwave remote sensing of soil moisture : a case study in Kurukavak Basin
Yılmaz, Musa; Şorman, Ali Ünal; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
Soil moisture condition of a watershed plays a significant role in separation of rainfall into infiltration and surface runoff, and hence is a key parameter for the majority of physical hydrological models. Due to the large difference in dielectric constants of dry soil and water, microwave remote sensing and particularly the commonly available synthetic aperture radar is a potential tool for such studies. The main aim of this study is to produce the distributed soil moisture maps of a catchment from active...
An evaluation study on instrumentation system of Cindere dam
Sezgin , Özgün İlke; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2008)
In this study, the first hardfill dam in Turkey, Cindere Dam, is evaluated regarding current and alternative measurement systems in detail. Cindere Dam is a notable project, especially with its height as an example of hardfill dam, not only in Turkey but also in the world. First, the current instrumentation system of Cindere Dam is evaluated as a whole with reference to the parameters measured, instruments and data acquisition system. Second, an alternative instrumentation system is developed by using addit...
Upgrading of slab-column connections using fiber reinforced polymers
Binici, Barış (Elsevier BV, 2005-01-01)
The results of an experimental program on upgrading of reinforced concrete slab-column connections subjected to monotonic shear and unbalanced moment transfer are presented in this study. Externally installed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) stirrups acting as shear reinforcement around the slab-column connection area were used with two patterns of CFRP arrangements. It was found that the proposed method resulted in punching shear capacity increases up to 60% relative to the specimen without any stren...
