The purpose of this study is to determine some of the factors that affect science achievement of eighth grade students in Turkey based on data results of Trends in International Science and Mathematics Study (TIMSS 2007). The present study investigated the relationship between the students’ achievement in science and certain factors such as student centered activities perceived by students, teacher centered activities perceived by students, students‟ attitude towards science, and students‟ need of science. This study was carried out during the spring semester of 2012. The sample was constituted from TIMSS 2007 data, which was collected from 4498 grade eight students from 146 randomly selected schools all over Turkey. The data was analyzed by using multiple regression analysis to investigate which factors were significantly affecting the grade 8 students‟ science achievement. The results showed that science achievement was positively related to all of the variables: attitude towards science, student centered activities, teacher centered activities, and need for science as a whole. However, when analyzing the relationship of each variable on its own with science achievement, it was found that science achievement was positively related to attitude towards science, student centered activities, and teacher centered activities, but not significantly related to need of science. Keywords: TIMSS 2007, science achievement, attitude towards science, student centered activities, teacher centered activities, need of science

Modeling of the factors affecting science achievement of eighth grade Turkish students based on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study - Repeat (TIMSS - R) data
Özdemir, Ertuğrul; Berberoğlu, Halil Giray; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2003)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that are related to students̕ science achievement in TIMSS-R. Basically instructional activities, affective characteristics of students and socioeconomic status (SES) were taken as the variables of the model proposed within the Linear Structural Modeling (LSM) framework. This study examined the TIMSS data for Turkish students with the sample size of 7841 through the analysis of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Resulting path diagram showed that the ...
Effect of Dynamic Geometry Environment on Immediate and Retention Level Achievements of Seventh Grade Students
Ubuz, Behiye; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat (2009-03-01)
Problem Statement: International studies, such as the repeat of Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and Programme for International Student Assessment, have shown that the mathematics achievements of Turkish students are lower than the international average. Geometry is an area of particular weakness. The use of dynamic computer environments has been advocated as a means to improve student understanding and problem-solving skills in geometry. Although a number of research studies have util...
The role of achievement goal orientations and interest on metacognitive strategy use of preservice science teachers
Atasoy, Volkan (2015-07-01)
The purpose of this study was to determine contribution of achievement goal orientations and personal interest on prediction of metacognitive strategy use of preservice science teachers. This study was conducted with three hundred and twenty-two preservice science teachers who are freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior of elementary science education program. Data was collected by using three instruments which are "Metacognitive Self-Regulation Subscale ofMotivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire", "A...
Analysis of the Problem Based Learning Implementations Students and Tutors Perceptions and Actions
Ateş, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (2015-03-01)
This study aims to analyze the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) in engineering education regarding perceptions and actions of tutors and students. A case study design was employed in this study. To this end, four tutors, their five PBL modules, and fourteen students were selected. Observations and interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The results indicated that there was a difference between participants’ perception of PBL and their actions during tutorials. Participants’ level of ...
Effect of project based instruction on science achievement: an experimental study with 7th grade students
Anteplioğlu, Armağan; Yıldırım, Ali.; Department of Curriculum and Instruction (2018)
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a project based learning (PBL) for 7th grade science unit titled “Cell and Divisions,” in terms of academic achievement, compared to traditional science instruction. Four groups of students in two schools in Bodrum, Muğla participated in the study in the 2018-2019 Fall semester. The intervention utilized pre and post-test control group quasi-experimental design with retention test where classes were randomly assigned to experimental (PBL) and control (tr...
