A numerical study on the dynamic behaviour of gravity and cantilever retaining walls with granular backfill
Yıldız, Ersan; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Dynamic behaviour of gravity and cantilever retaining walls is investigated by finite element method, incorporating the nonlinear elasto-plastic material properties of soil and seperation of the wall and backfill. Two dimensional finite element models are developed employing the finite element software ANSYS. The wall is modelled to rest on a soil layer allowing translational and rotational movements of the wall. Soil-wall systems are subjected to harmonic and real earthquake motions with different magnitud...
An investigation of compacted graphite cast iron production by means of thermal analysis technique and other process control windows
El-Mabrouk, Omar; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2007)
Compacted graphite irons have been proved valuable in many applications such as exhaust manifolds, hydraulic valves, and diesel engine blocks, the process of producing compacted graphite irons is not a straight forward process because of its narrow processing windows and its high sensitivity to the section thickness, treatment reaction time, pouring temperatures and charge composition. In this thesis, compacted graphite was produced with minimum variations through all section thickness and the effect of Mg/...
A model study on the seismic behavior of laterally braced sheet pile walls
Yunatcı, Ali Anıl; Özkan, Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2003)
1 -g shaking table tests were performed in order to study the seismic behavior of laterally braced sheet pile walls retaining cohesionless soil. The dynamic pressures, backfill accelerations and wall displacements were measured on a 65 cm high model wall under input accelerations ranging between 0.06g and 0.3 8g. The 3 mm thick wall was fixed at three levels. Data acquisiton components consisting of dynamic pressure transducers, accelerometers, displacement transducers, signal conditioning board and a data ...
A phase diagram for the ice VI-VII-VIII transitions
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (1998-04-01)
In this study we obtain the P-T phase diagram for the ice VI-VII-VIII phase transitions by means of the mean held model developed here. We have fitted the experimentally measured P-T data to our phase Line equations. Our calculated phase diagram describes adequately the observed behavior of the ice VI-VII-VIII phase transitions.
A numerical study on response factors for steel wall-frame systems
Arslan, Hakan; Topkaya, Cem (Wiley, 2010-11-01)
A numerical investigation was undertaken to evaluate the response of dual structural systems that consisting of steel plate shear walls and moment-resisting frames. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the influence of elastic base shear distribution between the wall and the frame on the global system response. A total of 10 walls and 30 wall frame systems, ranging from 3 to 15 stories, were selected for numerical assessment. These systems represent cases in which the elastic base shear res...
