Stability of beams in steel eccentrically braced frames
Yigitsoy, Gul; Topkaya, Cem; Okazaki, Taichiro (2014-05-01)
When an eccentrically braced frame (EBF) is subjected to a severe seismic event, large axial force and bending moments are produced in the beam outside of the link Designers face significant difficulties in meeting the capacity design requirement to keep these beams elastic. On the other hand, previous research suggests that controlled yielding in the beams is not detrimental to EBF performance as long as stability of the beam is maintained. A computational study was undertaken to investigate the stability ...
Strength and stiffness of floor trusses fabricated from cold-formed steel lipped channels
Dizdar, Cagan; Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-15)
This paper reports findings of an experimental study on floor trusses fabricated from cold-formed steel lipped channel sections. In design, the members of these trusses are generally considered as pin-ended and their capacities are assessed under pure compressive and tensile loads by making use of commonly accepted design specifications. Seventeen full-scale floor trusses were experimentally investigated through four point bending tests. Thickness of lipped channels, number of connection fasteners, and type...
Stability analysis of a coupled structure: a railway tunnel and a road cut slope
Ünlütürk, Burcu; Bilgin, Hasan Aydın; Department of Mining Engineering (2018)
A road-cut slope is planned for the construction of a new highway at Zonguldak province. This slope will be excavated by bench blasting method in close proximity to the No 50 Turkish State Railway Tunnel which is a masonry lined 84 years old tunnel in service. The excavation will continue until –approximately- 56 m horizontal and 55 m vertical distances remain to the tunnel lining. The plane failure risk of the slope and the damage risk of the tunnel are two major risks. Investigating stability of the slope...

Stability of a Compass Gait Walking Model with Series Elastic Ankle Actuation
Kerimoglu, Deniz; Morgul, Omer; Saranlı, Uluç (2015-07-31)
Passive dynamic walkers exhibit stable human-like walking on inclined planes. The simplest model of this behavior is the well known passive compass gait (PCG) model, which consists of a point mass at the hip and two stick legs. Due to their passive nature, these systems rely on a sloped ground to recover energy lost to ground collisions. A variety of methods have been proposed to eliminate this requirement by using different actuation methods. In this study, we propose a simple model to investigate how seri...
