In this thesis study, Ahmed Body and MIRA Notchback model were investigated experimentally. The drag coefficients of reference models were measured at three different Reynolds number via balance technique. The wakes of reference models were also investigated and the suitable location in order to measure the drag coefficient was determined via momentum integral method. Surface pressure of two different types of vehicle models was measured at three different Reynolds number. The wakes of Ahmed Body which has blunter shapes and sharp edges and MIRA Notchback model were investigated qualitatively by using laser and smoke and photographed. As a conclusion, it was investigated that for Ahmed Body model the drag coefficient increased as the Reynolds number increases, for MIRA Notchback model the drag coefficient decreased while the Reynolds number increases within the investigated limits.

Investigation of turbulence models used in automotive industry
Taştan, Umur; Çetinkaya, Tahsin Ali; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2011)
In this study; reliability and performance of turbulence models used in CFD softwares to determine the aerodynamics of passenger cars, are tested and compared. In the analyses, drag forces acting on the car, pressure and velocity distributions and wake flow patterns are determined by using several turbulence models with a commercial software Fluent. Calculated results compared to the experimental results given in the literature. It is observed that, turbulence models give relatively reliable results for det...
Kinetic studies for the production of tertiary ethers used as gasoline additives
Boz, Nezahat; Doğu, Timur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2004)
In the present study, the kinetics studies for etherification reactions were investigated in detail. In the first phase of present study, different acidic resin catalysts were prepared by the heat treatment of Amberlyst-15 catalysts at 220°C at different durations of time and also by the synthesis of sulfonated styrene divinylbenzene cross-linked resins at different conditions. A linear dependence of reaction rate on hydrogen ion-exchange capacity was in 2M2B+ethanol reaction. However, in the case of 2M1B+e...
Experimental investigation of flow separation from rigid walls with salient edges
Akçalı, Fikri; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2004)
This thesis presents the experimental results on the formation of flow separation from a rigid wall with a salient edge. In the case of automotive vehicles or aircrafts with rear cargo compartment doors, such salient edges are at the origin of separated wake flows resulting in increased drag and other disturbing effects. Recent studies of Ahmed et al. (1984) on simplified geometries showed the strong influence of the slant angle on the flow separations. In this study, the geometry is further simplified to e...
Cognitive aspects of conceptual modeling diagrams : an experimental study
Kılıç, Özkan; Say, Bilge; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2007)
This thesis is about diagrammatic reasoning and error-finding in conceptual modeling diagrams. Specifically, the differences of the cognitive strategies and behaviors of notation-familiar participants versus domain-familiar participants working on conceptual modeling diagrams are inspected. The domain-familiar participants are experienced in the topic being represented, but they do not have any formal training in software development representations. On the other hand, the notation-familiar participants are...
A computer simulation of void dynamics under the action of electromigration and capillary forces in narrow thin interconnects
Ogurtani, TO; Oren, EE (2000-10-25)
In these studies a comprehensive picture of void dynamics in connection with the critical morphological evaluation has been thoroughly anticipated in order to understand main reasons as well as the conditions under which premature failure of metallic thin interconnects occur. Our mathematical model on diffusion and mass accumulation on void surfaces, under the action of applied electrostatic potential and capillary effects, follows a novel irreversible but discrete thermodynamic formulation of interphases a...
