ERDEMİR Steel Plant produces wide range of alloy steel for various industries. Main demand of industries for steel is high quality end product with lower prices. One of the criterion affecting not only the steel cleanliness and also price of the product is bottom stirring in basic oxygen steelmaking. The objective of this study is to investigate effects of bottom stirring on basic oxygen steelmaking. With this objective, process parameters, analysis of produced heats were investigated to determine effects of stirring and optimum stirring program. For the current study, overall and individual analyses carried out using the turndown slag, the metal composition and the input materials data for many heats in terms of the amounts of oxygen, carbon, manganese, nitrogen, sulphur, and phosphorus at the end of blow. The results indicated the advantages of bottom stirring since it enables the steel production with lower amounts of oxygen, carbon, sulphur and phosphorus while it makes high manganese containing steel production possible. Additionally, by the help of bottom stirring higher iron yield is possible. The efficient removal of impurities comes along with a cleaner and high quality end product. Moreover, it is possible to have economic savings due to low requirements of deoxidizer and ferromanganese during the production.

Inclusion control at Çemtaş steel plant
Şahin, Berkay; Sevinç, Naci; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2012)
ÇEMTAŞ Steel Plant produces alloy steels used principally by the automotive industry. Demands of customers for cleaner steel with “fewer, smaller and homogenously distributed inclusions” are getting tighter with time. The tight demands of the customers are checked by ultrasonic testing and faulty regions are cut off and scrapped which results in production losses in steel plants. Decreasing production losses due to scrapping by producing cleaner steels is therefore a major concern. The objective of this stu...

ÇEMTAŞ Steel Plant produces alloy steels used principally by the automotive industry. For this industry, cleanliness of steel is a crucial criterion. In order to satisfy the demands of customers for cleaner steels and decrease the production losses a master thesis named “Inclusion control at ÇEMTAŞ Steel Plant” was started and completed. According to the results obtained in this study, it was concluded that inclusions are not the only cause of defects in the final product and that hydrogen is another import...
Effect of temperature on fatigue properties of Din 35 NiCrMoV 12 5 steel
Önem, Orkun Umur; Gürbüz, Rıza; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2003)
DIN 35NiCrMoV125 (equivalent to AISI 4340), which is a high strength low alloy steel (HSLA), is mainly used at military applications in the production of gun barrels. The main aim of this study was to determine the low cycle fatigue (LCF) behaviour and the influence of temperature on low cycle fatigue failure properties of that steel. Three different temperatures (room temperature, 2500C and 4000C) were used in the experiments in order to analyze the effect of temperature. For each temperature, five strain ...
Effects of Graphene Transfer and Thermal Annealing on Anticorrosive Properties of Stainless Steel
Oh, Jeong Hyeon; Han, Sangmok; Kim, Tae-Yoon; PARK, JONGEE; Öztürk, Abdullah; Kim, Soo Young (2017-11-01)
Stainless steel (STS) films were annealed in a thermal quartz tube and covered with graphene to improve their anticorrosive properties. Graphene was synthesized via the chemical vapor deposition method and transferred onto the surface of the STS film by the layer-by-layer approach. The structure of the STS film changed from alpha-Fe to gamma-Fe after annealing at 700 C for 1 h, resulting in an increase of 82.72% in the inhibition efficiency. However, one-layer graphene acted as a conductive pathway and ther...
Delamination of layered materials under impact loading
Dinç, Dinçer; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2003)
In this study, a cold worked tool steel and a low carbon steel ( St 37 ), which were joined by brazing, were subjected to impact and shear loading. The end product is used as paper cutting blades in the industry. Effects of different brazing filler metals on the delamination of the blades under impact loading and on the impact toughness of the blades were studied. The target is to achieve higher impact toughness values without delamination. Impact toughness of the steels, joined by Cu, CuNi and BNi brazing ...
