Since many countries suffer from existence of landmines in their territory, there is a growing demand for reliable landmine detection systems. Most of these systems require an operator to enter into the minefield. However, infrared sensor methods can be used remotely; hence, they do not put lives at risk during the search operation. In this thesis, a new approach to the infrared sensor method, which gives promising results, is presented.Buried landmines generate specific spatiotemporal thermal image patterns on the surface. Noise-reduced thermal image time series were used after preprocessing with a circularly symmetric filter different from other studies. Supervised classification methods (Support Vector Machine, Mahalanobis Discriminant Analysis, Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, and K-Nearest Neighbor) are applied on the filtered image series.Proposed method gives promising solutions that were verified with enlarged data sets. Different parameters (humidity, burial depths, training sample sizes, time intervals, seasons, spatial filter's sizes etc.) influences on the solutions were examined. To find thevimost useful time intervals, a 2-D heat transfer simulation was performed. Particularly using image series within nighttime, sunrise, and sunset times allow finding four-centimeter deep plastic and 6.8-centimeter deep metal practice landmines with the proposed method. The best solutions were got with the 50-pixel outer diameter spatial filter and the 24-sample on this diameter. Detection rates were calculated higher in quasi-humid soil than dry soil.

Buried and Surface Mine Detection From Thermal Image Time Series
Kaya, Serap; Leloğlu, Uğur Murat (2017-10-01)
Millions of buried and surface landmines throughout the world will continue to kill and injure people for many decades. Reliable landmine detection systems, especially those that do not require that an operator enters a minefield, are demanded. In such systems, data are captured by sensors and processed with signal-processing techniques. In recent studies, ground-penetrating radars, ultrasound transducers, metal detectors, and infrared sensors have been used to capture data as individual images or image tim...
Forward-looking long-wave infrared image based prescreener for landmine detection
Doğan, Aylin; Akar, Gözde; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2017)
Infrared imagery is widely used in many applications in both civilian and military areas. In landmine detection, the goal is to detect the anomalies between mine surface and soil from variation of reflected/emitted thermal radiation. In this thesis, various types of anomaly detection techniques of IR are investigated and the feasibility of these techniques for use in landmine detection is analysed. Additionally, effects of parameters for algorithms are compared and the parameters are optimized for increasin...
Machine scheduling with preventive maintenances
Batun, Sakine; Azizoğlu, Meral; Department of Industrial Engineering (2006)
In manufacturing environments, machines are usually subject to down periods due to various reasons such as preventive maintenance activities, pre-accepted jobs and pre-known material shortages. Among these reasons, preventive maintenance, which is defined as the pre-planned maintenance activities to keep the machine in its operating state, has gained much more importance in recent years. In this thesis, we consider the single machine total flow time problem where the jobs are non-resumable and the machine i...
Increasing air defense capability by optimizing burst distance
Türkuzan, Mehmet; Kocaoğlan, Erol; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
In this thesis, burst distance is optimized to increase air defense capability for systems utilizing airburst munitions. A simulator program is created to use during the study by taking advantage of the MATLAB environment. While creating the simulator program, a munition path model is derived by using fourth order Runge-Kutta method. Then, simulations are conducted at different burst distances and related information are recorded. By using least square optimization method and gathered data, optimum burst di...
SWIR objective design using seidel aberration theory
Aslan, Serhat Hasan; Yerli, Sinan Kaan; Keskin, Onur; Department of Physics (2016)
Optical systems are used for increasing the situational awareness and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities for military purposes. MWIR (Midwave infrared) and LWIR (Long wave infrared) waveband informations are the first two wavebands information in the atmospheric transmission window that are harnessed in military night vision optical systems. Another candidate of these operable wavebands is the SWIR (Shortwave infrared). Shortwave infrared (SWIR) imaging is an extension of Near ...
