The Smart city concept has become an important strategic planning mechanism in past decade or so, with respect to the combination of sustainability, information and communication technologies for urban development in many countries. This study is aimed at an in depth analysis of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to the smart city concept and its applicability to urban neighborhoods. The research is based on case studies in from around the world to determine the instruments of smartness; since the concept itself has wide, fuzzy boundaries, and includes many components for various disciplines that require the input from architects, urban planners, software engineers, and as such. Integration of all, within the architectural design domain is missing in the field. Existing frameworks for Smart Cities, and assessment schemes for urban sustainable neighborhoods were gathered and analyzed in this study. With determined KPIs framework, three different prominent smart city cases, namely, Malmö, Seoul, and Curitiba were studied and assessed. As a self-contained neighborhood example in Turkey, METU was handled as a case, assessment of the campus was done with determined KPIs. Recommendations for the smartization process of campus was presented.

Smart Cities and the Idea of Smartness in Urban Development - A Critical Review
Husar, Milan; Ondrejicka, Vladimir; Varis, Sila Ceren (2017-06-16)
The concept of smart cities is becoming another mantra for both developing and developed cities. For instance, Indian government in 2015 announced its objective to build one hundred smart cities all over the country. They clearly stated that they are choosing smart development as the underlying concept for their future growth as a way to foster economic development in smart way to avoid the paths of rapid industrialization and pollution of cities as it took place in Europe and United States. The first of th...

Okten, Deniz; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2007)
Technological innovations in the field of information and communication have transformed the nature of the spatial realm. The spatial realm has been engaged with the virtual realm, where a new approach has been mandatory for a possible and productive interrelation between the two. On the other hand, new technologies have affected architectural drafting, representation, construction and most significantly architectural design to generate remarkable conveniences and unnoticed interfaces for architects. New te...
Motivators and barriers for green building construction market in Turkey
Gündoğan, Handan; Aydın, İsmail; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
‘Green Buildings’ play an important role to increase the implementation of sustainable strategies in the construction industry. Although there is a process of change within Turkish building environment towards implementation of green strategies nowadays, limited research has been conducted to search the reasons that drive the market and the important barriers that block the green building movement. This thesis is intended to fill this gap in the literature and contribute to the field of knowledge regarding ...
Urban compactness : a study of Ankara urban form
Çalışkan, Olgu; Günay, Baykan; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2003)
Sustainable urban development is mentioned together with the concept of urban form in contemporary planning literature. The main reason behind this is a need for determining an ideal physical development scheme and its main principles of urban future in a broad term. Besides, the operational side of urban planning requires a concrete set of design codes in order to transform urban space in both macro and mezzo scale. At this point, the concept of urban compactness and the idea of Compact City have come into...

The increasing availability of Earth Observation (EO) technologies has provided new opportunities for a wide range of urban applications, such as mapping and monitoring of the urban environment, socio-economic estimations, characterization of urban climate, analysis of regional and global impacts and urban security and emergency preparedness. However, a gap exists between the research-focused results offered by the urban EO community and the application of these data and products by urban planners and decis...
