A Cutting Force Estimator for CNC Machining Centers

Lorenz, R.D.
This study presents a cutting force estimator topology for feed drives of CNC vertical machining centers to compute the machining forces accurately. The estimator employs recursive discrete Fourier transform to not only estimate inertial forces on the system but also to filter effectively the noise components in the measurements. The accuracy of the estimator is compared to that of a Luenberger observer while the overall performance of the estimator is evaluated through an experimental study. The paper also discusses its inherent limitations.

A Preliminary sizing tool for minimum weight aircraft wingbox structural design
Mert, Mesut; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2018)
This thesis presents a preliminary structural sizing tool for the design of aircraft wingbox structures. The primary goal is to obtain the least possible structural weight for a metallic wingbox by using the thin walled multi-cell box beam methods in the literature as part of an iterative process. An automatized tool based on simple and quick approximate methods is created to take advantage in the preliminary stages of design when several possible structural alternatives are being investigated. Airfoil data...
An Integration of Neural Network and Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm for CNC Machining Monitoring
Goli, Alireza; Tirkolaee, Erfan Babaee; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (2021-03-01)
This paper addresses Acoustic Emission (AE) from Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining operations. Experimental measurements are performed on the CNC lathe sensors to provide the power consumption data. To this end, a hybrid methodology based on the integration of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) is applied to the data resulting from these measurements for data fusion from the sensors which is called SFLA-ANN. The initial weights of ANN are selected using ...
A pseudospectral analysis of laminar natural convection and heat transfer between two inclined parallel plates
Kasapoğlu, Serkan; Tarı, İlker; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Three dimensional laminar natural convection flow of and heat transfer in incompressible air between two inclined parallel plates are analyzed with the Boussinesq approximation by using spectral methods. The plates are assumed to be infinitely long in streamwise and spanwise directions. For these directions, periodic boundary conditions are used and for the normal direction constant wall temperature and no slip boundary conditions are used. Unsteady Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved using a pseu...
A low cost uncooled infrared microbolometer focal plane array using the CMOS n-well layer
Tezcan, DS; Eminoglu, S; Akar, OS; Akın, Tayfun (2001-01-25)
This paper reports a low-cost, 256-pixel uncooled infrared microbolometer focal plane array (FPA) implemented using a 0.8 mum CMOS process where the n-well layer is used as the active microbolometer material. The suspended n-well structure is obtained by simple front-end bulk etching of the fabricated CMOS dies, while the n-well region is protected from etching by electrochemical etch-stop technique within a TMAH solution. Electrical connections to the suspended n-well are obtained with polysilicon intercon...
A computational procedure for estimating residual stresses and secondary plastic flow limits in nonlinearly strain hardening rotating shafts
Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2005-03-01)
A computational procedure to estimate the residual stress distributions and the limit angular speeds for avoiding secondary plastic deformation in nonlinearly strain hardening rotating elastic-plastic shafts is given. The model is based on von Mises yield condition, J(2) deformation theory and a Swift-type hardening law. The boundary value problem for the governing nonlinear differential equation is solved by a shooting method using Newton iterations with numerically approximated tangent. Solid as well as h...
