A simplified model for the analysis of machine foundations on a nonsaturated, elastic and linear soil layer

2001-12
A simplified semi-analytical method, which considers advantages of analytical and numerical approaches, is developed to compute the response of a rigid strip and circular machine foundations - subjected to a harmonic excitation - resting on a layer of soil deposit with a noncompliant rock or rock-like material at the base. The method is based on variational principles and minimization of energy using Hamilton's principle. Nondimensional equations are developed for both type of footing resting on a soil layer. Dynamic response characteristics are plotted by using nondimensional parameters for both types of footing.

Investigation of novel geometrical design concepts for damping treatments
Çavuş, Bertuğhan; Özgen, Gökhan Osman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-11)
Surface damping treatment concepts are developed utilizing viscoelastic materials as a damping layer where it is applied to the main structure. The main aim for adding these materials is to increase cyclic deformation in the frequency region of interest, which increases dissipated energy from the main structure. Constrained layer damping treatment is the most common, where the viscoelastic layer is constrained by a stiff top layer. Recently, a spacer or standoff layer has been added between the base and con...
A Karhunen-Loeve analysis of turbulent thermal convection
Tarman, Işık Hakan (1996-01-01)
The Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) procedure is applied to a turbulent thermal convection database which is generated numerically through integration of the Boussinesq equation in a periodic box with stress-free boundary conditions using a Fourier collocation spectral method. This procedure generates a complete set of mutually orthogonal functions in terms of which the turbulent flow fluctuation field is represented optimally in the mean square sense. A study is performed ranging from the direct projection of the dat...
Numerical investigation of unsteady natural convection from a heated cylinder in a square enclosure
Bozkaya, Canan (null; 2015-07-06)
A numerical study of two dimensional, unsteady, incompressible natural convection flow and heat transfer is performed in a square enclosure involving a heated circular cylinder. The natural convection is driven by a temperature difference between the cold outer square and hot inner circular cylinders. The temperature of the inner cylinder varies sinusoidally with time about a fixed mean temperature while the outer enclosure is kept at a lower constant temperature. The problem under consideration, which is g...
A refined dynamic theory for viscoelastic cylindrical shells and cylindrical laminated composites, Part 1: General theory
Birlik, G.A.; Mengi, Yalçın (Elsevier BV, 1989-4)
Through the use of a new technique, approximate theories are developed for the dynamic response of viscoelastic cylindrical shells and cylindrical laminated composites (CLC). The new technique eliminates the inconsistencies between the deformation shapes assumed over the thickness of the shell and the boundary or interface conditions to be satisfied on its lateral surfaces. Accordingly, the theory correctly predicts the dynamic behavior of shells or CLC without using any correction factors. Due to its lengt...
A new formulation for the analysis of bonded elastic layers
Pınarbaşı, Seval; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
Elastic layers bonded to reinforcing sheets are widely used in many engineering applications, e.g., as elastic foundations to machinery, as seismic isolators to structures, etc. Because of its practical importance, the behavior of bonded elastic layers under some basic deformation modes (e.g., compression, bending and shear modes) has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, the analytical works available in literature involve, with the object of obtaining design formulas, many simplifying assu...
