A novel integrated optical modulator design is presented using zero index metamaterial-based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer with photonic crystal phase shifters. The phase modulation relies on the shift between the photonic bandgaps having non-zero and zero effective refractive indices. A small change in the bulk index results in an effective index change between the arms of the MZI due to the disturbance of the band structure. Thus, such a structure provides a new approach for phase modulation on integrated optical systems with the possibility of low insertion losses and low-voltages.

Tunable integrated optical modulator with dynamical photonic band transition of photonic crystals

A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer based optical modulator composed of photonic crystals as phase shifters is presented. The switching process relies on the phase modulation along the arms of interferometer resulted from the photonic band shift of the photonic crystal regions. A small bulk index change leads to a large effective index difference between two arms of the interferometer and a small foot-print device can operate as a modulator. Presented MZI-based optical modulator is shown to have tunable bandwidth...
Alternative design of left-handed metamaterial based on circular resonator and wire strip for waveguide configurations with sensing and absorber applications
Gunduz, Ozan T.; Sabah, Cumali (2015-08-01)
An alternative design of left-handed (LH) metamaterial (MTM) for waveguide configurations is presented with sensor and absorber applications. The LH structure is based on two identical circular ring resonators connected with a wire strip. Both simulation and experimental results show that the planar MTM has an LH resonance at similar to 9.9 GHz. Surface current and magnetic field distributions at the resonance are also presented to show the LH behavior of the structure in detail. In addition, a parametric s...
Integrated Optical Modulator Based on Transition between Photonic Bands

An area efficient novel optical modulator with low operation voltage is designed based on integrated Mach-Zehnder Interferometer with a photonic crystal slab structure as the phase shifter. Plasma dispersion effect is utilized so that photonic band-to-band transition occurs at the operating frequency leading to a high index change (Delta n = similar to 4) for pi-phase shift on the modulator. This approach reduces the phase shifter length to a few micrometers (similar to 5 mu m) in a silicon on insulator pla...
Design optimization of a fully integrated charge-pump with LC tank oscillator for ultra-low voltage energy harvesting
Jayaweera, H. M. P. C.; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2017-01-01)
Model based optimization of a novel integrated interface circuit topology is presented for low voltage DC-DC step-up conversion. A cross-coupled charge pump is implemented in standard 0.18 mu m CMOS technology using an integrated LC tank oscillator to enable a compact, low cost, self-starting solution with maximum efficiency at ultra-low input voltage levels available from embedded micro-power generators. The voltage doubling oscillator can start up with input as low as 0.10 V. Full system can step 0.2 V up...

This paper reports the design, fabrication, and validation of a novel integrated interface circuit for ultra-low voltage step up converter in 0.18 mu m CMOS technology. The circuit does not use off-chip components. Fully integrated centre-tap differential inductors are introduced in the proposed LC oscillator design to achieve 38% area reduction compared to the use of four separate inductors. The efficiency of the system is hence enhanced through the elimination of clock buffer circuits traditionally utiliz...
