Al90Sm10, a marginal glass former, was rapidly solidified using Cu-block single roller melt spinning at wheel speeds of 30 and 40 m/s. The product phases of rapid solidification were identified and analyzed using high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (HEXRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and atom probe tomography. The as-quenched structure consists of a saturated amorphous phase and nanocrystalline Al with typical length scale of about 5 nm. The appearance of a pre-peak on HEXRD diffraction patterns and a low activation energy for first crystallization as determined using the Kissinger and Ozawa methods indicate some local ordering in the amorphous phase. The devitrification phase transformation path was determined using in situ high energy synchrotron radiation. Three phases, MS1, H1, and Al4Sm, were identified during decomposition of the amorphous phase. MS1, H1 and Al4Sm are cubic, hexagonal and orthorhombic metastable phases, respectively. Determination of the influence of TiO2 on the elastic properties of a mica based glass ceramic by ultrasonic velocity measurements
Gür, Cemil Hakan; Öztürk, Abdullah (Elsevier BV, 2005-11-15)
The influence of small amount (1 or 2 wt%) of TiO2 additions and crystallization heat treatment on the elastic properties of a mica based glass ceramic have been investigated by ultrasonic velocity measurements. The mica based glass ceramic was prepared through controlled crystallization of a glass in the SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, K2O and F system. Evidences of TiO2 acting as a nucleating agent in this system was demonstrated. The longitudinal and transversal wave velocities of the as-prepared glass and the mi...
Solid-state synthesis and X-ray diffraction studies of Na2S
Kizilyalli, M.; Bilgin, M.; Kizilyalli, H.M. (Elsevier BV, 1990-4)
Na2S was synthesized by a new solid-gas reaction of Na2CO3 with a sulfidizing gas mixture and a solid-solid reaction of carbon with Na2SO4. The reaction products were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction and IR methods. Two new crystal modifications of Na2S were identified in addition to the previously reported antifluorite structure. They were designated as cubic Form II and orthorhombic Form III. The approximate unit cell dimensions were found to be a = 11.29 Å for the cubic form and a = 15.94, b = 16.00,...
Thermally stimulated currents in layered semiconductor Tl4In3GaS8
Hasanlı, Nızamı; Mogaddam, N. A. P. (IOP Publishing, 2006-09-01)
We have carried out thermally stimulated current measurements on as-grown Tl4In3GaS8 layered single crystals in the temperature range 10-90 K with different heating rates of 0.10-0.30 K s(-1). The data were analysed by curve fitting, heating rates and isothermal decay methods. The results were in good agreement with each other. Experimental evidence was found for one trapping centre in Tl4In3GaS8 crystal with an activation energy of 12 meV. The capture cross section and concentration of the traps were found...
Al3+ doped nano-hydroxyapatites and their sintering characteristics
Evis, Zafer (Ceramic Society of Japan, 2006-11-01)
Pure and Al3+ doped nano-hydroxyapatites (HA) were synthesized by a precipitation method to investigate their densification and thermal stability after the air sintering at 1100 degrees C and 1300 degrees C. Second phases were formed after increasing the All, content from 2.5% to 7.5% in HA and increasing the sintering temperature from 1100 degrees C to 1300 degrees C. Al3+ addition into HA resulted in change in the hexagonal lattice parameters from the pure HA. When the sintering temperature was increased ...
Mg adsorption on Si(001) surface from first principles
Shaltaf, R; Mete, E; Ellialtıoğlu, Süleyman Şinasi (American Physical Society (APS), 2004-03-01)
First-principles calculations using density functional theory based on norm-conserving pseudopotentials have been performed to investigate the Mg adsorption on the Si(001) surface for 1/4, 1/2, and 1 monolayer (ML) coverages. For both 1/4 and 1/2 ML coverages it has been found that the most favorable site for the Mg adsorption is the cave site between two dimer rows consistent with the recent experiments. For the I ML coverage we have found that the most preferable configuration is when both Mg atoms on 2 x...
