User evaluation of HCI concepts for defining product form

2008-01-01
A complaint amongst industrial designers is that the human-computer interaction (HCI) of computer-aided design (CAD) systems does not fit their needs for defining product form. This paper disseminates research to identify and address the shortfalls. A strengths and weaknesses analysis of three modelling media (foam, CAD, FreeForm((R))) is reported and used to influence the design of 11 novel HCI concepts for form creation. Expert users are found to prefer 'virtual workshop' and 'intelligent environment' concepts, whilst immersive environs-rents capable of rapid project switching are liked. The results justify initiatives for developing prototype and commercial systems.

A semantic discontinuity detection (SDD) method for comparing designers' product expressions with users' product impressions
Khalaj, Javad; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs (Elsevier BV, 2019-05-01)
Designers exert substantial effort to define an intended user experience (UX) for a product, service or system. However, discontinuities can arise when the actual UX of users differs from the design intent. This paper presents a `Semantic Discontinuity Detection' (SDD) method capable of locating discontinuities between (i) realized product semantics, based on users' initial visual impression of a product, and (ii) intended product semantics, based on the originating designer's visual product expression. The...
An evaluation of haptic feedback modelling during industrial design practice
Evans, M; Şener Pedgley, Bahar; WALLACE, D; CHESHIRE, David (Elsevier BV, 2005-09-01)
Whilst new technologies in designing and rapid prototyping offer demonstrable benefits, their use can remove the potential for the designer to actively engage in the definition of form through tactile interaction with a physical material (as when working with foam or clay). This paper investigates the use of a haptic feedback device to facilitate interaction with virtual geometry and provide the designer with tactile cues during product modelling. The study concludes that limitations in the modelling capabi...
User requirements for analogical design support tools: Learning from practitioners of bio-inspired design
Töre Yargın, Gülşen; Crilly, Nathan (Elsevier BV, 2018-09-01)
When designers develop biologically-inspired design (BID) solutions, they are engaging in a process of analogical design. Software tools have been developed to support analogical design processes, presenting designers with information to help in the construction of useful analogies. However, the requirements for such tools have not been explicitly informed by accounts of practitioners' experiences. To address this, interviews were conducted with 14 expert practitioners in BID to understand how they find and...
The (in)secure position of the design jury towards computer generated presentations
Basa, İnci (Elsevier BV, 2005-05-01)
The tendency towards computer aid in design presentations differs in academia than in the practicing field; practice seems to welcome computer aid in presentation, whereas in academia there seems to be a dilemma. In this study, we approach this duality based on our teaching experience within an interior architecture curriculum. First, we unfold the problematic to identify the contributing factors, then we observe the tendencies through a questionnaire with design students and interviews with design instruct...
Rethinking digital industrial design: a mandate for virtual workshops and intelligent environments
Şener Pedgley, Bahar (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
In an era of major technological strides in computer interaction, it is a disappointment industrial designers continue to report that current CAD packages are too rooted in engineering design to be effective in supporting their own creative practices. This paper examines the nature of their dissatisfaction and proposes solutions. A comprehensive observational study of industrial designers' existing CAD and physical modelling activities is reported, from which an evidence base for the specification of improv...
