New types of fiber-reinforced rubber-based seismic isolators have been a research interest for a number of engineers in the past decade. These new types of isolators can have similar seismic performances compared with the conventional ones. In most of the previous researches, the fiber-reinforced rubber-based isolators is usually manufactured with placing fiber sheets between precut rubber layers with the use of a bonding agent. This research differs from the previous researches in terms of manufacturing process, use of fiber mesh instead of fiber sheets, and use of lead in the core for some of the bearings. The aim of this research is to provide comparisons in fundamental seismic response properties of the new type of fiber mesh reinforced isolators and conventional isolators. In this scope, four pairs of fiber mesh reinforced elastomeric bearings and four pairs of steel-reinforced elastomeric bearings are subjected to various levels of compression stresses and cyclic shear strains under constant vertical pressure. The tested types of isolators are fiber mesh reinforced elastomeric bearing, fiber mesh reinforced elastomeric bearing with lead core, steel-reinforced elastomeric bearings, and steel-reinforced elastomeric bearings with lead core. In this research, steel-reinforced bearings are called conventional isolators. Themajor advantage for fibermesh reinforced bearings observed during the tests is that these isolators can develop a considerable low horizontal stiffness compared with the conventional isolators. The damping characteristics of the new and conventional types are similar to each other. Copyright (C) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Evaluation of displacement coefficient method for seismically retrofitted buildings with various ductility capacities
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2014-07-25)
This research study is aimed at evaluating the accuracy of the displacement coefficient method (DCM) of FEMA 440 and associated nonlinear static procedure (NLSP) for actual buildings with soft story mechanism and various ductility capacities. The DCM and associated NLSP are evaluated using two existing seismically vulnerable buildings with soft story mechanism. The buildings are first retrofitted using a ductile steel-brace-link system to represent those with good ductility capacity and then retrofitted wit...
Prediction of input energy spectrum: attenuation models and velocity spectrum scaling
Alici, F. S.; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2016-10-25)
Recent improvements in performance-based earthquake engineering require realistic description of seismic demands and accurate estimation of supplied capacities in terms of both forces and deformations. Energy based approaches have a significant advantage in performance assessment because excitation and response durations, accordingly energy absorption and dissipation characteristics, are directly considered whereas force and displacement-based procedures are based only on the maximum response parameters. En...
An improvement to linear-elastic procedures for seismic performance assessment
Gunay, Mehmet Selim; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2010-07-10)
An improved linear-elastic analysis procedure is developed in this paper as a simple approximate method for displacement-based seismic assessment of the existing buildings. The procedure is mainly based on reducing the stiffness of structural members that are expected to respond in the inelastic range in a single global iteration step. Modal spectral displacement demands are determined from the equal displacement rule. Response predictions obtained from the proposed procedure are evaluated comparatively by ...
The role of overstrength on the seismic performance of asymmetric-plan structures
Kaatsız, Kaan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2019-04-10)
Uneven distribution of seismic demand in asymmetric-plan structures is a critical concern in earthquake-resistant design. Contemporary seismic design strategies that are based on linear elastic response, single load reduction factor, and uniform ductility demand throughout an asymmetric system generally lead to unsatisfactory performance in terms of realized ductilities and nonuniform damage distribution due to strong torsional coupling associated with asymmetric-plan systems. In many cases, actual nonlinea...
Structure-soil-structure interaction of adjacent buildings subjected to seismic loading
Bybordiani, Milad; Arıcı, Yalın (Wiley, 2019-06-01)
The problem of the through-soil coupling of structures has puzzled the researchers in the field for a long while, especially regarding the varied performance of identical, adjacent buildings in earthquakes. The phenomenon of structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) that has often been overlooked is recently being recognized: The possible effects in urban regions are yet to be thoroughly quantified. In this respect, the goal of this work was to rigorously investigate the interacting effects of adjacent bu...
