Exterior glazing has been popular in commercial buildings especially in multistory buildings; the glass panels are bonded to the exterior of the building by silicone sealants. Thus, the glazing is identified as ''structural glazing''. Of all the structural glazing systems, the four sided support system is the most critical one. As the glass panels are designed to withstand lateral wind pressures, and when the lateral deflection of the panels increases more than its thickness, the glass plates behave nonlinearly, creating very complex stress distribution in the sealants. The sealants are subjected to normal, shear and moment forces on the edges, and a mathematical model is developed to compute the stresses in the sealants. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

On the convergence of nonlinear plate solutions
Aşık, Mehmet Zülfü (1997-10-01)
In modern buildings, especially in commercial buildings, large glass panels are used as windows. Design of these glass panels is becoming important. Behavior of the thin glass panels is geometrically nonlinear. Thus, analysis needs iterative solution and the solution of nonlinear plate problems with elastic supports necessitates a complete displacement formulation. The authors think that it could be useful to share their experience gained from research on the solution of von Karman equations using lateral d...
Modeling, design, and tests of post-tensioned glass tbeam
Koca, Emrullah; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Traditionally, glass is widely used in buildings as windows where its brittleness and strength capacity are not significant. Although there is more demand for usage of glass as a structural material, common fear of its brittle nature has mostly hindered its structural use. Aesthetics, recyclability, and transparency are the main reasons of the interest for glass in structural field. Moreover, glass shows significantly more benefits for certain types of projects such as existing building extensions and histo...
Analytical and Experimental Investigation of Post-tensioned Tempered Glass T-Beams
Türer, Ahmet; Koca, Emrullah (2021-09-01)
- Construction materials used for buildings and bridges show significant changes during the course of last centuries. While stone, bricks, adobe, and timber had traditionally been the main construction material, the 20th century has been dominated by reinforced concrete and steel especially for tall structures. Strength, ductility, and unit weight are the major concerns in structural design, while appearance is more important from architectural point of view. Recycling is becoming more important from sustai...
Evaluation of the Predictive Models for Stiffness, Strength, and Deformation Capacity of RC Frames with Masonry Infill Walls
Turgay, Tahsin; Durmus, Meril Cigdem; Binici, Barış; Ozcebe, Guney (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2014-10-01)
Buildings with masonry infill walls (MIWs) in reinforced concrete (RC) frames are commonly used all around the world. It is well known that infill walls may affect the strength, stiffness, and displacement ductility of the structural system. Different approaches have been adopted in different codes and guidelines to consider the stiffness and strength contribution of MIWs on RC frame behavior. This study compares the ability of the existing guidelines to estimate stiffness, strength, and deformability of RC...
Analysis of a multi-story reinforced concrete residential building damaged under its self-weight
Korkmaz, Hasan Husnu; Yakut, Ahmet; Bayraktar, Atilla (Elsevier BV, 2019-04-01)
Reinforced concrete framed residential buildings are remarkably common in Turkey. Observations after recent earthquakes revealed that a great portion of the present building stock has inadequate seismic resistance. Moreover, collapses of several multi-story reinforced concrete buildings under their self-weight have also been observed despite any dynamic activity. The tragic example of the collapse of the "Zumrut" residential building under its self-weight in 2004 and the death of its 93 occupants have highl...
