The kinetic parameters including the activation energy for crystallization (E), the Avrami parameter (n) and frequency factor (v) of a glass in the MgO-CaO-SiO2-P2O5-F system were studied using non-isothermal differential thermal analysis (DTA) with regard to small amount of TiO2 additions. It has been shown that the role of TiO2 changes from a glass network former to a glass network modifier with increasing TiO2 content in this system. The kinetic parameters of the crystallizing phases, apatite and wollastonite, indicated changes accompanied with TiO2 additions, implying that the TiO2 is an effective nucleating agent for promoting the crystallization of apatite and wollastonite. The most effective addition is of about 4 wt% TiO2 in this system. The wear rate and friction coefficient decreased from 1.8 +/- 0.1 to 0.9 +/- 0.2 and 0.87 to 0.77, respectively, when 4 wt% TiO2 was incorporated to the base glass. Effect of Nb addition on the critical parameters of BSCCO superconductor
Sozeri, H.; Ghazanfari, N.; Oezkan, H.; Kılıç, Adnan; Hasanlı, Nızamı (2007-04-12)
Pure and Nb2O5 added Bi1.6Pb0.4NbxSr2Ca2Cu3O delta superconductors (0 <= x <= 0.30) were synthesized by the ammonium nitrate melt route. Fraction of the high T-c 2223 phase increases with addition of small amounts of Nb. AC susceptibility and transport measurements showed the optimum Nb concentration as x = 0.10. Nb additions above x = 0.20 decrease significantly the fraction of the high-T-c phase and degrade the superconducting properties.
Effect of H2O and SO2 on the activity of Pd/TiO2 catalysts in catalytic reduction of NO with methane in the presence of oxygen
MITOME, Junko; Karakaş, Gürkan; Bryan, Kimberly A.; Ozkan, Umit S. (1998-06-18)
Effect of H2O and SO2 on the NO reduction activity of the Pd/titania catalysts was examined in the NO+CH4+O-2 reaction. Steady-state and transient response experiments were performed using a tubular flow reactor. Isotopically labeled methane, (CH4)-C-13, was used in studying the transient behavior of the catalytic system. Reactor effluents were analyzed by using gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and chemiluminescense techniques. Steady-state reaction experiments showed that the catalyst has a high acti...
Effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate membrane fabrication by phase inversion and deacetylation by alkaline hydrolysis
Tekin, Fatma Seden; Çulfaz Emecen, Pınar Zeynep; Department of Chemical Engineering (2022-8)
In this study, the effect of solvent choice on cellulose acetate (CA) membrane morphology and performance was investigated to relate this to the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase inversion. Three different solvent systems were used, which are dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the mixture of DMSO: acetone (DA) and DMSO: acetic acid (DHAc) in the ratio of 1:1. Water was used as non-solvent. Acetone and acetic acid were chosen due to their similar solvent quality for cellulose acetate based on Hansen solubility pa...
Effect of Y Addition on the Structural Properties and Oxidation Behavior of Fe60Al40-nYn Alloys (n=1, 3, and 5 at.%)
Yildirim, Mehmet; Atas, Mehmet Sahin; Akdeniz, Mahmut Vedat; Mehrabov, Amdulla (2022-04-01)
The influence of Y addition on the microstructural features, phase relationships, hardness, magnetic behaviour and cyclic oxidation performance of Fe60Al40-nYn alloys (n = 1, 3, and 5 at.%) has been examined in detail. Al8Fe4Y phase formed even at 1 at.% Y addition because of the limited solid solubility of Y in the FeAl-based phase. For all the examined compositions, the Al8Fe4Y phase developed a eutectic with the FeAl-based phase and its volume fraction increased with increasing Y up to 5 at.%, which is n...
Effect of Sm on Crystallization Kinetics of Cu-Zr-Al Metallic Glasses
Sıkan, F.; Polat, G.; Kalay, I.; Kalay, Yunus Eren (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
The effect of Sm micro-alloying on non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization kinetics of (Zr50Cu40Al10)(100-x)Sm-x (x = 0, 2, 4 at. % Sm) alloys were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystallization activation energies for each composition were calculated in non-isothermal conditions using Kissinger and Ozawa methods and in isothermal conditions using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami model. XRD analysis showed that crysta...
