Pseudo-dynamic testing of a concrete gravity dam

2015-09-01
Inspired from the simplified single degree of freedom modeling approach used in the preliminary design of concrete gravity dams, a pseudo-dynamic testing method was devised for the seismic testing of a concrete gravity dam section. The test specimen was a 1/75 scaled section of the 120-m-high monolith of the Melen Dam, one of the highest concrete gravity dams to be built in Turkey. The single degree of freedom idealization of the dam section was validated in the first stage of the study using numerical simulations including the dam-reservoir interaction. Afterwards, pseudo-dynamic testing was conducted on the specimen using three ground motions corresponding to different hazard levels. Lateral displacement and base shear demands were measured. The crack propagation at the base of the dam was monitored with the measurement of the crack widths and the base sliding displacements. After the pseudo-dynamic loading, a static pushover test was conducted to determine the reserve capacity of the test specimen. Despite major cracking at the base of the monolith, neither significant sliding nor a stability problem that might jeopardize the stability of the dam was observed. State of the art in roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams: design and construction
Söğüt, Serdar; Arıcı, Yalın; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) appeared as a feasible new type of construction material for concrete gravity dams. RCC became very popular rapidly all over the world due to its low cost and fast deployment and is used for various purposes, including the construction of new dams, pavements, highways and the rehabilitation of existing dams. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate wide range of practice in RCC dam construction with a focus on the material properties. The material properties of a r...
Seismic testing of a scaled roller-compacted-concrete gravity dam
Gharibdoust, Ali; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Within the last half-century, seismic response analysis of concrete gravity dams has been extensively studied. Studies reveal that two types of failure modes prevail in the form of dam body cracking or base slide. The literature lacks the conditions that clearly differentiate the two failure types. In this context a state of the art single degree of freedom pseudo-dynamic testing was developed to assess the gravity dam response on smooth foundation interface. Three different hazard levels of earthquake name...
Quantitative comparison of 2D and 3D modeling for concrete gravity dams
Evliya, Ekin Erdem; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Seismic behavior of gravity dams has long been evaluated and predicted using a representative 2D monolith for the dam. Formulated for the gravity dams built in wide-canyons, the assumption is nevertheless utilized extensively for almost all concrete dams due to the established procedures in 2D space as well as the expected computational costs of building a three dimensional model. A significant number of roller compacted concrete dams are being designed based on these procedures regardless of the valley dim...
Seismic Performance Evaluation of Concrete Gravity Dams by Using Pseudo Dynamic Testing and Simulations
Aldemir, Alper; Binici, Barış (null; 2017-11-24)
Dams are one of the mostimportantinfrastructure components servingfor water storage and energyproduction.Experimental studies on the seismic response of concrete gravity dams are scarce due to the complications regarding thelargescaleof dams and their interaction with the reservoir. This study presents the results of recent novel pseudo-dynamic dam tests (PSD) along with the nonlinear finite element simulations of the specimens. The test specimens were 1/75 scaled version of the highest ...
