For many years, copper bearing steels’ usage in steel industry was limited by copper’s detrimental effect on hot working capability. However with the latest findings that eliminates this negative effect with the addition of nickel, copper has emerged as an alloying element option. In various studies, copper is found to precipitate in ferrite phase after aging and leads to an increase in mechanical properties such as hardness and strength while still having a good amount of ductility-strength balance. In this thesis study, the effect of copper addition and the effect of copper precipitation hardening on medium-carbon steels which is not extensively studied previously will be addressed. To understand the effect, Cu-alloyed 4330M and 4330M medium carbon steels were cast and heat treated to obtain either martensitic or bainitic microstructure. These steels were then aged at various temperatures with different times and mechanical and microstructural properties of Cu-alloyed 4330M and Cufree 4330M steels were compared. Copper was found to be retarding the softening in both martensitic and bainitic steels and Cu-alloyed bainitic steel yielded around 50 HV higher hardness values than that of 4330M when aged at 450°C for 270 minutes.

The effect of copper on the microstructure and aging characteristics of an 0.8%C bainitic steel
Yıldırım, Çağatay; Ögel, Bilgehan; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2022-12-02)
Copper causes hot shortness in steel. However, the 1:2 nickel-to-copper ratio avoids hot shortness phenomena. Also, it is known that an aging treatment applied to ferritic steels causes age hardening via the precipitation of Cu in the form of BCC copper-rich clusters. The latter phenomenon was studied extensively in low and medium-carbon steels. In this study, the copper precipitation in bainitic high-carbon steel and its effect on microstructure and properties are investigated. To achieve this, 0.8% C stee...
The environmental impacts of iron and steel industry: a life cycle assessment study
Olmez, Gulnur Maden; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Karanfil, Tanju; Yetiş, Ülkü (2016-09-01)
This study conducts a life cycle assessment for iron and steel production in Turkey using SimaPro software and IMPACT 2002+ impact assessment method with the purpose of comparing the impacts of processes (coke making, sintering, iron making, steel making) and final products (billet, slab, hot rolled wire rod, hot rolled coil), concurrently. System boundary was set as cradle-to-gate and functional unit was selected as 1 ton of final steel product. Among the processes, steel making process exhibited the highe...
The influence of flow forming on the precipitation characteristics of Al2024 alloys
Karakaş, Aptullah; Fenercioğlu, Tevfik Ozan; Yalçınkaya, Tuncay (2021-09-15)
Aluminum alloys are heat treated for better specific strength. In certain cases, an intermediate cold work is applied between solution heat treatment and aging. In this study, a specific tube forming technique called flow forming is applied as the intermediate cold work to produce Al2024-T8 grade tubes, resulting in enhancement of mechanical properties. The correlation between the amount of cold work and final mechanical properties is studied through tensile tests, SEM and XRD. The study is concluded with a...
The effect of tempering on susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking of AISI 4140 steel in 33% sodium hydroxide at 80 degrees C
Sarioglu, F (2001-09-30)
The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviour of low alloy steel AISI 4140 was investigated in 33% sodium hydroxide solution at 80 degreesC under freely corroding conditions. Tempering temperatures of 450, 500, 550, 600 and 650 degreesC were used to produce a range of micro structures and strength levels. The relation between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor was obtained by constant displacement rate tests conducted on pre-cracked compact tension specimens. The crack growth behaviour an...
The effect of double austenitization on the microstructure and toughness of AISI M2 high speed steel
Ögel, Bilgehan (1998-06-01)
In this study, the effect of double austenitization on microstructure and toughness of AISI M2 high speed steel was investigated. For double austenitization treatment, the specimens, which are hardened initially at 1220 degrees C and quenched in air, were hardened for a second time in the temperature range 1150 - 1050 degrees C. For comparison purposes, another set of specimens is austenitized singly in the temperature range 1150 - 1050 degrees C. Tempering process was carried out between 500 - 640 degrees ...
