Momentum exchange in coaxial jet flows
Peker, Ekim Atilla; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
Coaxial jet flows have a considerable practical application area as water jet pumps. Efficiency of such systems is affected by complex turbulence mechanisms and large-scale vortex structures formed in the mixing regions. An experimental setup is constructed to estimate the momentum exchange rates and mixing of the two jet flows from the coaxial pipes. Pressure distributions along the mixing pipe wall are measured for different flow ratios of the jets. In addition to present experiments, numerical data of tw...
Momentum measurement by the multiple Coulomb scattering method in the OPERA lead-emulsion target
Agafonova, N; et. al. (IOP Publishing, 2012-1-16)
A new method of momentum measurement of charged particles through multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in the OPERA lead-emulsion target is presented. It is based on precise measurements of track angular deviations carried out thanks to the very high resolution of nuclear emulsions. The algorithm has been tested with Monte Carlo pions. The results are found to describe within the expected uncertainties the data obtained from test beams. We also present a comparison of muon momenta evaluated through MCS i...
Momentum transfer continuum between preshape and grasping based on fluidics
Özyer, Barış; Erkmen, İsmet; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
This dissertation propose a new fluidics based framework to determine a continuum between preshaping and grasping so as to appropriately preshape a multi-fingered robot hand for creating an optimal initialization of grasp. The continuum of a hand preshape closing upon an object that creates an initial object motion tendency of the object based on the impact moment patterns generated from the fingers is presented. These motion tendencies should then be suitable for the proper initiation of the grasping task....
Momentum Transfer from the Fingers to Object Based on Fluid Dynamics
Ozyer, Baris; Erkmen, İsmet; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref (2010-10-22)
The initial effect of the impact force patterns on the object for achieving stably grasping is dependent on starting of the movement of a robot hand by taking an optimal preshape. These impact force patterns generated from the changes of the momenta obtained from the fingers lead to motion tendencies of the object. Determining optimal preshape of hand is closely related with the continuum between the initial position of hand preshape and posture of the hand at the contact points on the object. In this paper...
Momentum Transfer from Preshape to Grasping
Ozyer, Baris; Erkmen, İsmet; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-08-01)
A fully immersed object, suspended in water can be rotated from distance by a preshaped robot hand approaching and closing upon the object prior to contacting it. Momentum transfer from robot fingers closing into a grasp, to the fluid medium particles, and from these particles to the object surface generates the motion tendencies of that object in terms of rotational and translational displacements. In this paper, we propose the novel concept of a controller that determines either: 1) given initial position...
