Model photography has been practiced for a long time in the field of architecture; however, it has not been described as a different genre, and no specialized studies have been done on the subject until the 2010s. This thesis aims to show that model photography has filled a gap for the representation of architecture with its intrinsic features as a visual document and with its potential for different uses. The model has been used throughout the history of humankind, as a means of carrying information of different qualities, while it maintained its reference to physical reality and the human body. Under the influence of socio-cultural changes, not only the practice of architecture has been transformed, but also the main functions of the model have been differentiated. Photography had a transforming effect on the model’s representational characteristics, functions, and its relationship with human beings. This thesis explores the features of model photography through essential developments in the history of this medium of representation. Then, it conveys the significant experiences of the actors who used model photography to design, experiment, document, and communicate in the field of architecture. The potential of model photography will be examined in the universal context, so the pioneering cases of this medium will be presented. Finally, in order to develop the arguments, and in accordance with the findings of the thesis, the basic functions of model photography, and the effects of technological developments which are related with model photography, on the architectural practice will be discussed.

Photograph as an architectural document : a visual archive for METU Campus
Akyol, Melike; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2012)
This thesis aims at providing a pragmatic and conceptual basis essential for the establishment of an architectural photography archive for METU. The goal is to propose a methodology regarding the formation of an archive, which is physically and intellectually “accessible,” and to inquire future possibilities for its extension. The conceptual framework will be established by focusing on two main topics: theories of art, specifically focusing on photograph as a visual document, and architectural history writi...
Reconsidering architectural program within the framework of conjectures and refutations: the design studies journal
Özten, Ülkü; Özkar, Mine; Department of Architecture (2014)
The discussion of program in the field of history and theory of the Modern Movement in architecture enters a new period in the 1960s and 70s under the influence of the strong embodiment of science and technology in the field of design research. Beginning with this period, the idea of program arises both in a series of generations parallel to a specialized, sophisticated understanding of design and as an autonomous professional area of study. While the concept was being largely developed under the influence ...
A Method for performance based design exploration : generating external shading units for an office building in Nicosia, Cyprus
Burak, Ercan; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2013)
Performance based design exploration has been practiced in architectural design for more than four decades. It has been within the scope of the expertise of technical and engineering professionals until now, and has become widely accessible to the architect within the last decade Latest advances in the computational and parametric tools and user interface enhancements in the simulation software has rendered possible the active involvement of the architect into the process. Every design process needs a custo...
The architectural precedent and the diagram: a comparative analysis of Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye and Rem Koolhaas' Maison a Bordeaux
Küçük, Alper; İmamoğlu, Vacit; Department of Architecture (2007)
The last decade of the 20th century witnessed a revival of interest in the idea of diagrams in many disciplines, including architecture. Thus, terms like 'diagram architecture' and 'diagrammatic practice' have started to dominate the architectural discourse, both in theory and practice. Although much of the contemporary work examined under the rubric 'diagram architecture' celebrate diagram's capacity to generate new ideas and forms and embrace the diagram as a tool to revolt against the authority of establ...
Intersections: architecture and photography in Victorian Britain
Acar, Sibel; Enginsoy Ekinci, Ayşe Sevil; Department of History of Architecture (2009)
Architecture and photography have always been closely interacted since the invention of photography in the late 1830s.While architecture has been captured as one of the main subjects of photography, photography has served architecture as a valuable tool of representation. Focusing on the frame defined by Victorian Britain, this study tries to capture intersecting histories between photography and architecture. Accordingly three intersections were defined: the first intersection corresponds to the simultaneo...
