In this study, we present a new formulation for the air defense problem of warships in a naval task group and propose a solution method. We define the missile allocation problem (MAP) as the optimal allocation of a set of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) of a naval task group to a set of attacking air targets. MAP is a new treatment of an emerging problem fostered by the rapid increase in the capabilities of anti-ship missiles (ASMs), the different levels of air defense capabilities of the warships against the ASM threat, and new technology that enables a fully coordinated and collective defense. In addition to allocating SAMs to ASMs, MAP also schedules launching of SAM rounds according to shoot-look-shoot engagement policy or its variations, considering multiple SAM systems and ASM types. MAP can be used for air defense planning under a given scenario. As thorough scenario analysis would require repetitive use of MAP, we propose efficient heuristic procedures for solving the problem. Optimal air defense strategies for naval task group

We develop solution methods for the air defense problem of a naval task group in this dissertation. We consider two interdependent problems. The first problem is the optimal allocation of a set of defensive missile systems of a naval task group to a set of attacking air targets. We call this problem the Missile Allocation Problem (MAP). The second problem called the Sector Allocation Problem (SAP) is the determination of a robust air defense formation for a naval task group by locating ships in predefined s...
A multi-objective approach for dynamic missile allocation using artificial neural networks for time sensitive decisions
Karasakal, Orhan; Karasakal, Esra; Silav, Ahmet (2021-01-01)
In this study, we develop a new solution approach for the dynamic missile allocation problem of a naval task group (TG). The approach considers the rescheduling of the surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), where a set of them have already been scheduled to a set of attacking anti-ship missiles (ASMs). The initial schedule is mostly inexecutable due to disruptions such as neutralization of a target ASM, detecting a new ASM, and breakdown of a SAM system. To handle the dynamic disruptions while keeping efficiency h...
ANALYSIS OF AIR DEFENSE EFFECTIVENESS OF A NAVAL TASK GROUP UNDER PARTIAL AND FULL COORDINATION
Köse, Bala İlkim; Karasakal, Esra; Karasakal, Orhan; Department of Industrial Engineering (2022-5-10)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the air defense effectiveness of a naval task group (TG) under different coordination levels. Event Graphs methodology, and component-based discrete-event simulation modeling techniques are used. The simulation model is built using Simkit, an open-source java package, which enables the use of component-based modeling. TG is analyzed under different coordination policies consisting of no-coordination, partial coordination, and full coordination within TG, then these c...
Life cycle cost and environmental impact analysis of ship hull maintenance strategies for a short route hybrid ferry
Wang, Haibin; Oğuz, Elif; Jeong, Byongug; Zhou, Peilin (Elsevier BV, 2018-08-01)
This paper provides a general insight into the importance of proper hull maintenance and suggests an optimal maintenance strategy for ship operators from both an economic and environmental point of view. Results of life cycle assessment show that significant cost reductions can be obtained by renewing steels every 10 years within the proposed hull maintenance strategy. The assessment also indicates that annual hull inspections and re-coating can contribute to reducing hull resistance and hence fuel consumpt...
A flexible reference point-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm: An application to the UAV route planning problem
DAŞDEMİR, ERDİ; Köksalan, Mustafa Murat; TEZCANER ÖZTÜRK, DİCLEHAN (Elsevier BV, 2020-02-01)
We study the multi-objective route planning problem of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) moving in a continuous terrain. In this problem, the UAV starts from a base, visits all targets and returns to the base in a continuous terrain that is monitored by radars. We consider two objectives: minimizing total distance and minimizing radar detection threat. This problem has infinitely many Pareto-optimal points and generating all those points is not possible. We develop a general preference-based multi-objective evo...
