This study covers the investigation of behavior and comparison of two bearing types (elastomeric and pot bearings) under earthquake effects. Real earthquake records are used in this study. Earthquake selection is an important process. The plan behind the selection process is to cover the earthquakes with high occurrence rates in real life and to gain more realistic results. Magnitudes of selected earthquakes are 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0. The location assumed at which the effects of earthquakes investigated is 15 to 30 km away from the fault. Soil class of the assumed location is either C or D. Depending on earthquake magnitude and soil properties, 6 data groups are formed. In each group, 7 different earthquake data are taken into consideration. To make a comparison between the behavior of different bearing types, elastomeric and pot bearings are chosen since they are the most widely used bearing types. For elastomeric bearing used cases; case 1 is using elastomeric bearing under each beam and case 2 is using less elastomeric bearing under the cross beam. In pot bearing case, say case 3, the same amount of bearings is taken into the account as in case 2 of elastomeric bearing is used. This study has been done for the bridge which is 95-meter-long with 3 spans and 2 piers. Each pier has a height of 15 meters. For the analytic model and structural analysis finite element program, SAP2000 v.14.2.2 has been used. Within this study behavior of bearings under real earthquake effect depending upon magnitude and soil properties are investigated.

Evaluation of the performance of the face slab of a CFRD during earthquake excitation
Arıcı, Yalın (Elsevier BV, 2013-12-01)
The primary goal of this study was to examine the cracking behavior of the face plate of a CFRD during earthquake excitation. Analyses of the impounding stage and earthquake loading were conducted in sequential phases using a 2-D plane-strain model with the appropriate non-linear constitutive relationships for the dam constituents. The effect of rockfill stiffness and the face plate design properties on the seismic performance of the face plate was investigated. The crack widths on the plate increased with ...
Investigation of tribological behaviours of graphene-coated journal bearing
Yıldız, Bayram; OVALI, İSMAİL; ÜNLÜ, CUMHUR GÖKHAN (2018-01-01)
In this study, we investigated macro- and nano-scale tribological behaviours of single-layer graphene on steel parts. Single layer graphene was synthesized via Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) on copper foil and then transferred onto commercial journal bearing that has a considerable rough surface. Nanotribological tests were carried out by using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) under loadings differs from 5 to 30 nN, and macrotribological experiments were done using pin on disc type tribometer at three differ...
Simulation of Through Hardening of SAE 52100 Steel Bearings Part II Validation at Industrial Scale
Evcil, Elif; Müştak, Ozan; Şimşir, Caner (null; 2015-09-23)
In this study, the material dataset presented in part I of this article is validated at industrial scale in batch through‐hardening of bearing races. The material dataset acquired is implemented in a commercial heat treatment simulation software. Heat transfer coefficients for the oil and salt bath are determined by using a commercial standard quench probe. Zone temperatures and transfer times of the roller‐belt furnace are measured directly from the system.Through‐hardening of inner ring (IR) of 6813 beari...
Numerical simulation of scour and backfilling processes around a circular pile in waves
Baykal, Cüneyt; Fuhrman, D. R.; Jacobsen, N. G.; Fredsoe, J. (2017-04-01)
This study continues the investigation of flow and scour around a vertical pile, reported by Roulund et al. (2005). Flow and scour/backfilling around a vertical pile exposed to waves are investigated by using a three-dimensional numerical model based on incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The model incorporates (1) k-omega turbulence closure, (2) vortex shedding processes, (3) sediment transport (both bed and suspended load), as well as (4) bed morphology. The numerical simulations are...
Testing and analysis of different hold down devices for CFS construction
Pehlivan, Barış Mert; Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (Elsevier BV, 2018-06-01)
This paper summarizes the findings of a two-phase study on hold down devices used in cold formed steel (CFS) structural systems. The first phase consisted of component testing and numerical analysis of hold down devices while the second phase was based on testing of CFS framed sheathed wall panels under cyclic lateral loading. Eleven monotonic and three cyclic tensile load tests were performed on seven different types of hold down devices to assess the performance of readily available hold downs and propose...
