We demonstrate irreversible blocking of ion channels using single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) functionalized with 2-aminoethylmethane thiosulfonate (MTSET). In contrast, as-produced and purified SWNTs exhibit reversible blocking, indicating that the MTSET molecule attached to SWNTs chemically interacts with the cysteine groups in the ion channels. Functionalization of SWNTs with MTSET is inferred from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which clearly shows absorptions due to -CH stretching and deformation modes, and decrease in intensity of the -COOH line due to reaction of acid functionalized SWNTs with the basic N-CH3 end of the MTSET molecule.

Direct measurement of charge transport through helical poly(ethyl propiolate) nanorods wired into gaps in single walled carbon nanotubes

We report the direct measurement of electrical transport through rod-like polymer molecules, of poly(ethyl propiolate) (PEP), utilizing single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) as electrodes. The electrical properties of the devices were measured (i) before cutting a SWNT, (ii) when a SWNT was cut and (iii) after PEP deposition into the nanoscale gap in a cut SWNT. The gate-dependent electrical properties showed a reduction in current from I-on = 2.4 x 10(-7) A for SWNT devices to I-on = 3.6 x 10(-9) A for PE...
Enhancement of H-2 Storage in Carbon Nanotubes via Doping with a Boron Nitride Ring
Onay, Aytun Koyuncular; Erkoç, Şakir (American Scientific Publishers, 2009-04-01)
Hydrogen storage capacity of carbon nanotubes with different chirality have been investigated by performing quantum chemical methods at semiempirical and DFT levels of calculations. It has been found that boron nitrite substitutional doping increases the hydrogen storage capacity of carbon nanotubes.
The quantum confined Stark effect in silicon nanocrystals
Kulakci, Mustafa; SERİNCAN, UĞUR; Turan, Raşit; Finstad, Terje G. (IOP Publishing, 2008-11-12)
The quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) in Si nanocrystals embedded in a SiO(2) matrix is demonstrated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at room and cryogenic temperatures. It is shown that the PL peak position shifts to higher wavelengths with increasing applied electric field, which is expected from carrier polarization within the quantum dots. It is observed that the effect is more pronounced at lower temperatures due to the improved carrier localization at the lowest energy states of the quantum d...
Silicon nanowire-silver indium selenide heterojunction photodiodes
KULAKCI, Mustafa; ÇOLAKOĞLU, Tahir; OZDEMİR, Baris; Parlak, Mehmet; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Turan, Raşit (IOP Publishing, 2013-09-20)
Structural and optoelectronic properties of silicon (Si) nanowire-silver indium selenide (AgInSe2) thin film heterojunctions were investigated. The metal-assisted etching method was employed to fabricate vertically aligned Si nanowire arrays. Stoichiometric AgInSe2 films were then deposited onto the nanowires using co-sputtering and sequential selenization techniques. It was demonstrated that the three-dimensional interface between the Si nanowire arrays and the AgInSe2 thin film significantly improved the ...
Interactions at fiber/matrix interface in short fiber reinforced amorphous thermoplastic composites modified with micro- and nano-fillers
Isitman, Nihat Ali; Aykol, Muratahan; Kaynak, Cevdet (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2012-01-01)
This study aims at systematically extracting fiber/matrix interfacial strength in short-glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites using an experimental micromechanics approach which employs mechanical properties and residual fiber length distributions to derive the apparent interfacial shear strength. We started from neat high-impact polystyrene matrix short-glass fiber-reinforced composites (HIPS/GF) with varying fiber loading and proceeded toward HIPS/GF hybrid composites containing micro- and nano-filler...
