Karaca, Mehmet; Varol, Çiğdem (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2012-12-1)
The rapid increase in energy demand and consumption has intensified the necessity of developing new methods to ensure energy efficiency. When heating, cooling, lighting and other equipments in buildings are accounting for 24% of total energy consumption, it is inevitable to take more initiatives to reduce energy consumption in the construction sector. New residential areas cannot anymore be the places, where natural resources are consumed recklessly. They should be designed as livable areas, where preservin...

Generated power of a solar panel is volatile and susceptible to environmental conditions. In this study, we have analyzed variables affecting the generated power of a 17.5 kW real-world solar power plant with respect to five independent variables over the generated power: irradiance, time of measurement, panel's temperature, ambient temperature and cloudiness of the weather at the time of measurement. After our analysis, we have trained three different models to predict intra-day solar power forecasts of th...
Health impacts of indoor air pollution from household solid fuel on children and women
Ali, Muhammad Ubaid; Yu, Yangmei; Yousaf, Balal; Munir, Mehr Ahmed Mujtaba; Ullah, Sami; Zheng, Chunmiao; Kuang, Xingxing; Wong, Ming Hung (2021-08-15)
The inefficient and incomplete combustion of solid fuel (SF) is associated with high levels of indoor air pollutants leading to 3.55 million deaths annually. The risk is higher in women and children, due to their higher exposure duration and unique physical properties. The current article aims to provide a critical overview regarding the use of solid fuel, its associated pollutants, their toxicity mechanisms and, most importantly the associated health impacts, especially in women and children. Pollutants as...
Comminution: Technology, Energy Efficiency and Innovation

With pressures to improve energy efficiency in mining, reducing energy usage in comminution has become the focus of innovation. Several advances have been made however the uptake of innovations and technologies is slow. A Technology Readiness Level guide has been developed for other industries that may be a useful tool for the mining industry. Examination of selected successful energy efficient technologies provides some insights and lessons that may provide direction for advancing new technologies. This pa...
Optimum daily operation of a wind-hydro hybrid system
Ercan, Eray; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (2022-06-01)
© 2022 Elsevier LtdDue to the negative effects of fossil fuels on the environment and health, energy supply is shifting towards renewables. The integration of renewable energy systems is challenging due to the intermittent nature of renewables, however this can be mitigated through storage. Uncertainty in electricity prices in spot markets further complicates the operation of these systems. Pumped storage hydropower is currently the most viable form of large-scale energy storage, and operation of renewable ...
