The results of 1991-1994 basin-wide investigations have been analysed using the method of spatial isopycnal analysis. Seasonal and interannual variations of phosphates, nitrates, dissolved oxygen and the suboxic zoneare revised. The range and possible reasons of spatial and temporal variations in the density-dependent vertical profiles of nutrients and oxygen in the layer of the main pycnocline, in the thickness and the position of suboxic zone of the Black Sea are discussed.

Assessment of Point-Source Stochastic Simulations Using Recently Derived Ground-Motion Prediction Equations
Akkar, Dede Sinan; Yenier, Emrah (Seismological Society of America (SSA), 2009-12-01)
The simplicity of the point-source stochastic simulation method makes it one of the most appealing tools for the quantification of ground motions for seismic hazard related studies. In this article, we scrutinize the limitations of this technique in terms of fundamental geophysical model parameters. To achieve this objective, we use the estimations of recent Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) and European empirical ground-motion models that are based on global strong-motion databases. The generated synthetic...
Time domain Gauss-Newton seismic waveform inversion in elastic media
Sheen, Dong-Hoon; Tuncay, Kağan; Baag, Chang-Eob; Ortoleva, Peter J. (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2006-12-01)
We present a seismic waveform inversion methodology based on the Gauss-Newton method from pre-stack seismic data. The inversion employs a staggered-grid finite difference solution of the 2-D elastic wave equation in the time domain, allowing accurate simulation of all possible waves in elastic media. The partial derivatives for the Gauss-Newton method are obtained from the differential equation of the wave equation in terms of model parameters. The resulting wave equation and virtual sources from the recipr...
Temporal variations and sources of organic pollutants in two urban atmopsheres: Ankara and Ottawa
Oğuz Kuntasal, Öznur; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
This study aimed at providing a thorough understanding of temporal and spatial variations of VOCs and underlying factors in different microenvironments in two different urban atmospheres, with different degrees of regulatory enforcement. The VOC data were collected in field campaigns conducted in Ankara, Turkey, and Ottawa, Canada over the years 2000-2004. Insight into the sources of VOCs in different urban atmospheres was sought by using three commonly used receptor models namely; Positive Matrix Factoriza...
Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Reinforced Concrete School Buildings in Turkey
Mazılıgüney, Levent; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2020-10-21)
The walk-down and preliminary seismic vulnerability assessment procedures for low-to-mid-rise RC school buildings are examined by detailed analysis. The correlation of significant damage-inducing parameters and the performance is studied by using results obtained from detailed analysis. The databases of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning and the Governorship of İstanbul are used for this study. 321 RC School buildings that were assessed using the 2007 Turkish Earthquake Code were employed. The p...
Statistical tolerancing using designed experiments in a noisy environment
Köksal, Gülser (Elsevier BV, 2003-03-01)
We consider the method of designed experiments for statistical tolerance analysis, and study the impact of experimental error on its results.-It is observed that presence of random error in the experiment environment (e.g. laboratory) could introduce bias in the moment estimators and increases their-respective variances. We propose adjustments to the method that would reduce the bias as well as the variance of these estimators. A numerical example is presented.
