Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A type epoxy resin-polyether polyol-organically treated montmorillonite ternary nanocomposites were synthesized in this study. The effects of addition of polyether polyol as an impact modifier on morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SENI), differential scanning calorimetry, impact and tensile testing. The results showed that organically treated montmorillonite is intercalated by epoxy, since the interlayer spacing expanded from 1.83 to 3.82 nm upon nanocomposite synthesis. The addition of polyether polyol impact modifier had no effect on the interlayer spacing. SEM examination showed that polyol forms an immiscible phase in the epoxy matrix. Thermal characterization of nanocomposites indicated an increase in T-g with respect to both polyether polyol and montmorillonite contents. The impact strength of the samples with no clay was improved approximately 160% upon adding 7 wt% polyether polyol. In polyether polyol modified nanocomposites, the impact and tensile strengths decreased with respect to increasing amount of montmorillonite and showed a maximum with respect to the polyether polyol content at constant clay loading. The Young's modulus of the nanocomposites exhibited an increase with respect to the montmorillonite loading and showed a maximum with respect to the polyol content at each clay loading.

Activated carbons (ACs) are successfully synthesized from Elaeagnus grain by a simple chemical synthesis methodology and demonstrated as novel, suitable supercapacitor electrode materials for graphene hydrogel (GH)/AC nanocomposites. GH/AC nanocomposites are synthesized via hydrothermal process at temperature of 180 degrees C. The low-temperature thermal exfoliation approach is convenient for mass production of graphene hydrogel (GH) at low cost and it can be used as electrode material for energy storage ap...
Nanostructure of montmorillonite barrier layers: A new insight into the mechanism of flammability reduction in polymer nanocomposites
Isitman, Nihat Ali; Kaynak, Cevdet (2011-12-01)
This study describes the mechanism of flammability reduction in flame-retarded polymer matrix organo-montmorillonite reinforced nanocomposites. Morphologies of untested polymer nanocomposites and char residues formed by combustion in the mass loss calorimeter are characterized by XRD and TEM techniques. It is postulated that a combination of well-dispersed montmorillonite platelets and flame retardants in the polymer matrix provides nano-structured char formation. Initial montmorillonite dispersion in flame...
Phase transition of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure
ŞİMŞEK, TELEM; Karci, Ozgur; ÖZCAN, ŞADAN (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, 2018-01-01)
We present the results of a study related to phase transformation of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure from face-centered cubic into face-centered tetragonal structure. As-synthesized nanoparticles are around 4.5 nm and show superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K. After annealing under 60 bar pressure of hydrogen at 400 degrees C for 2 h, nanoparticles exhibit strong ferromagnetic behavior with 5391 Oe coercivity. Results show that high-pressure annealing lowers the decomposition te...

This study draws on our experiences with graphene to perform a hybrid TCO structure composed of AZO and graphene. We first set out to enhance the electrical and optical properties of AZO to enable its use especially in the field of solar cell. Hence, in our study, we deposited various thicknesses of AZO thin films on glass substrates and transferred single layer graphene on them to realize the formation of hybrid TCO structure. Among the various AZO film thicknesses, the optimum one, 300 nm, was determined ...
Synergistic effect of boron containing substances on flame retardancy and thermal stability of intumescent polypropylene composites
Yılmaz, Ayşen; BAYRAMLI, ERDAL (2010-12-01)
The synergistic effect of four different boron containing substances, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), boron silicon containing preceramic oligomer (BSi) and lanthanum borate (LaB), were studied to improve the flame retardancy of a polypropylene (PP) intumescent system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER). The flame retardancy of PP composites was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI). UL-94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter tests. Th...
