In this study, we consider a class of nonlinear aeroelastic stability problems, where geometric nonlinearities arising from large deflections and rotations in the structure interact with aerodynamic nonlinearities caused by moving shocks. Examples include transonic panel flutter and flutter of transonic wings of high aspect ratio, where the presence of both structural and aerodynamic nonlinearities can have a dramatic qualitative as well as quantitative effect on the flutter behavior. Both cases represent inherently nonlinear fluid-structure problems, where neglecting either the structural or the fluid nonlinearities can lead to completely erroneous stability predictions. The results presented in this paper illustrate the rich and in some cases surprising flutter behaviors of transonic wings, and the inherent limitations of the von Karman nonlinear plate model in strongly nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problems of this type. Error analysis and feasibility study of dynamic stiffness matrix-based damping matrix identification
Özgen, Gökhan Osman (Elsevier BV, 2009-02-06)
Developing a method to formulate a damping matrix that represents the actual spatial distribution and mechanism of damping of the dynamic system has been an elusive goal. The dynamic stiffness matrix (DSM)-based damping identification method proposed by Lee and Kim is attractive and promising because it identifies the damping matrix from the measured DSM without relying on any unfounded assumptions. However, in ensuing works it was found that damping matrices identified from the method had unexpected forms ...
DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF GEARED SHAFT SYSTEMS BY USING A CONTINUOUS SYSTEM MODEL
Şener, Ö Sedat; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat (Elsevier BV, 1993-09-22)
In this study dynamic mesh forces and dynamic factors in a geared shaft system are studied by using a continuous system model. The system consists of a gear pair, two shafts carrying gears, and two inertias representing drive and load in the system. A continuous system model is used to include the shaft inertias, which are usually disregarded even in most of the sophisticated models. The primary aim of this work is to provide a tool for studying the effect of shaft inertia in gear dynamics, and to present s...
Direct identification and expansion of damping matrix for experimental-analytical hybrid modeling
Özgen, Gökhan Osman (Elsevier BV, 2007-11-20)
The theory of direct experimental identification of damping matrix based on the dynamic stiffness matrix (DSM) method is further developed in this work. Based on the relationship between the DSMs of the smaller experimental model and larger analytical model, the mathematical relationship between the damping matrices of the two models is established. Examining the relationship, two methods are developed that can be used to expand the experimental damping matrix to the size of the analytical model. Validity o...
Stability and breathing motions of pressurized compressible hyperelastic spherical shells
Akyüz, Uğurhan (Elsevier BV, 2001-10-18)
The stability of homogeneous, isotropic, compressible, hyperelastic, thick spherical shells subjected to external dead-load traction are investigated within the context of the finite elasticity theory. The stability of the finitely deformed state and small, free, radial vibrations about this state are investigated using the theory of small deformations superposed on large elastic deformations. The frequencies of small free vibrations about the pre-stressed state are obtained numerically. The loss of stabili...
TRANSIENT WAVE-PROPAGATION IN LAYERED MEDIA CONDUCTING HEAT
TURHAN, D; CELEP, Z; ZAINEDDEN, IK (Elsevier BV, 1991-01-22)
Transient wave propagation in thermoelastic layered composites consisting of alternating isotropic, homogeneous and linearly elastic high-strength reinforcing and low-strength matrix layers is investigated. The layers of the composite medium can be plane, cylindrical or spherical. The inner surfaces of the composite bodies are subjected to uniform time dependent dynamic inputs. A common formulation is employed for the three types of layered media. The generalized theory of thermoelasticity is used, with the...
