This paper presents a set of regression models which incorporates concrete and steel types in modeling the costs of office buildings. To these ends, three typical office buildings with seven and 15 stories have been designed by the help of a commercial software taking into account the Turkish practice. In each project C-16, C-20, C-25, C-30 and C-35 concrete classes and S-220 and S-420 steel types were used for dimensioning purposes. Rough construction costs were then calculated for different combinations of concrete classes and steel types. The findings of the study revealed that column dimensions decrease following an increase in a particular concrete class. However, this decrease stops after C-30. Furthermore, an average cost difference of 16% was observed between the steel types S-220 and S-420.

Cost effect of earthquake region and soil type for office buildings in Turkey
Kanit, Recep; Gunduz, Murat; Ozkan, Omer (Elsevier BV, 2007-10-01)
In this study, the change in the load-bearing system cost of a reinforced concrete office building has been investigated in relation to the earthquake regions and soil types. Three different office projects each with five stories were investigated. The structural design calculations have been made according to four different soil types and four different earthquake regions. According to each combination, concrete, steel and formwork adopted approximations were calculated to reach the rough cost of each offi...
Cost-based analysis of quality in developing countries: a case study of building projects
KAZAZ, AYNUR; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; ULUBEYLİ, SERDAR (Elsevier BV, 2005-10-01)
This paper examines construction quality costs in Turkey. First, background information is presented on quality costing, on the prevention, appraisal, and failure (PAF) approach, and on PAF components. Secondly, a model is presented for determining the optimum level of total quality cost. Finally, a case study in which the costs of quality in a mass-housing project were collected and evaluated is presented. For the case study, the data were obtained in two stages: (i) during the construction period and (ii)...
Strategic use of quality function deployment (QFD) in the construction industry
Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (Elsevier BV, 2005-02-01)
In this paper, an attempt has been made to examine the applicability of QFD as a strategic decision-making tool after the construction stage of a housing project to determine the best marketing strategy, to make a comparison between the performances of different competitors and to transfer the experience gained from the current project to the forthcoming projects. For this purpose, a QFD team has been formed to collect and verify the expectations of the customer profile of the sample project, which was a hi...
Load rating of concrete-deck-on-steel-stringer bridges using field-calibrated 2D-grid models
Türer, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2011-04-01)
This paper presents and discusses issues related to structural identification, calibrated model-based load rating, and sensitivity of rating to the analytical model, along with experimental studies conducted on an existing concrete-deck-on-steel-stringer bridge. The proposed model-updating procedure uses collected dynamic data (mode shapes, modal frequencies, and order of modes) as well as static deformed shape information. Two-dimensional (2D) grid models were developed to successfully simulate the transve...
Lifetime Performance Analysis of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridges. I: Theory
Akgül, Ferhat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2005-06-01)
In this first part of a two-part paper, a general methodology for lifetime performance analysis of existing reinforced concrete bridges is presented. The framework for the methodology is established by identifying four distinct categories: limit state equations, random variables, deterministic parameters, and constant coefficients. The limit state equations are derived by strictly adhering to the load and capacity formulas and requirements set forth in AASHTO specifications. Generality is pursued by establi...
