A study has been undertaken to establish relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances, F(A), F(L) and F(LS), and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. Prediction equations were formed to estimate the cutting resistance from the geotechnical parameters by multiple regression analysis and the cone indenter index, uniaxial compressive strength and Shore hardness parameters have been found to be the most significant predictors.

Effects of Soil Bridge Interaction and Abutment Deck Continuity on the Live Load Distribution Factors in Integral Bridge Components
Erhan, Semih; Dicleli, Murat (2009-10-01)
In this study, the effects of soil bridge interaction and abutment deck continuity on the live load distribution in integral bridge components are studied. For this purpose, 2-D and 3-D structural models of typical integral and conventional bridges having various structural, geometric and geotechnical properties are built. The analyses of the models are then conducted under AASHTO live load. The analyses results revealed that soil-bridge interaction has significant effects on the live load distribution in a...
CORRELATION OF MICROSTRUCTURE AND FAILURE INITIATING SITES IN AN AISI M2 HIGH-SPEED STEEL USING VICKERS INDENTATION
Ögel, Bilgehan (1990-01-01)
In this study, the relation of crack initiation and propagation to microstructure was shown in an AISI M2 high-speed steel using Vickers hardness indentation. Observations were carried out on the cracks generated from the corners of the square pyramid indentation in both the as-quenched, the quenched and tempered specimens. It is shown that cracks are nucleated from the corners of the indentation by either cleavage of the carbide or by decohesion between the carbide and the matrix, depending on the size o...
Relationship between suction and shear strength parameters of compacted METU campus clay
Tilgen, Hüseyin Pars; Çokça, Erdal; Department of Civil Engineering (2003)
In this study, the relationship between soil suction and shear strength parameters of compacted METU campus clay were investigated at different moisture contents. Soil samples were tested at optimum moisture content (i.e. w=20.8%), at dry side of optimum moisture content (i.e. w=14.8%, 16.8%, 18.8%) and at wet side of optimum moisture content (i.e. w=22.8%, 24.8%, 26.8%). Direct shear tests were performed to measure shear strength parameters (c', F') and soil suctions were measured by filter paper method af...

Correlations of SPT, CPT and pressuremeter test data in alluvial soils. Case study: Tabriz Metro Line 2, Iran

The Menard pressuremeter modulus (E-m), limit pressure (P-L), shear modulus (G) and subgrade reaction modulus (K-s) can be obtained by using the pressuremeter test, and are needed as parameters to obtain the geotechnical parameters for foundation design and to determine the ultimate bearing capacity in engineering projects. In this article, correlations of Menard pressuremeter tests (PMTs) with standard penetration tests (SPTs) and cone penetration tests (CPTs) are obtained as a consequence of the extensive...
