Imaging electrical current density using nuclear magnetic resonance

1998-01-01
In this study, images of nonuniform and uniform electric current density in conductor phantoms, which contain magnetic resonance active nuclei, are produced using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A standard spin echo pulse sequence is used, with the addition of a bipolar current pulse. The flux density parallel to the main magnetic field, generated by the current pulse, is encoded in the phase of the complex MR image. The spatial distribution of magnetic flux density is extracted from the phase image. Current density is calculated using the magnetic flux density. This fairly recent technique is known as Magnetic Resonance Current Density Imaging (MRCDI). In this paper, images of magnetic flux density, generated by uniform and nonuniform current flow, and the current density image of a uniform current flow are given. Current density levels as low as 1µA/mm2 are measured. Effects of current density on k-space data are also discussed.

Analysis of magnetic resonance imaging in inhomogenous main magnetic field
Arpınar, Volkan Emre; Eyüboğlu, Behçet Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
In this study, analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in inhomogeneous main magnetic field is conducted. A numerical model based on Bloch equation is implemented for MRI, to understand effect of inhomogeneous magnetic field to Magnetic Resonance (MR) signal. Using the model, relations between inhomogeneity levels in main magnetic field with energy, decay time, bandwidth of the FID signal is investigated. Also relation between the magnetic field inhomogeneity and field of view is determined. To simulat...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that can visualise samples' interior by using the signal coming from mobile protons. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of oil content and peanut/raisin addition on cake quality and to illustrate the power of MRI in analysis of moisture and oil distribution. For this purpose, MR images were acquired with a spin echo sequence and relaxation times T-1 and T-2, and moisture content and firmness of cakes were measured. High oil c...

Induced Current Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography (ICMREIT) is an emerging imaging methodology that utilizes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques to visualize the electrical conductivity as a new contrast. In ICMREIT, by fast switching of gradient fields of Magnetic Resonance (MR) system eddy currents are induced in the imaging volume. The secondary magnetic field generated by the induced eddy currents can be extracted from the MR phase images. Image reconstruction algorithms then us...

In gradient coil based induced current magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (ICMREIT), gradient coils of a conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner are excited with time varying waveforms embedded in an MRI pulse sequence [1], [2], [3]. As a result of the excitation, low frequency (LF) eddy current is induced in the volume conductor media being imaged which accumulates phase to MR signal. By measuring and post-processing the LF phase of the eddy current, LF conductivity images are...

Magnetic Resonance Current Density Imaging (MRCDI) is an imaging modality, which reconstructs electrical current density distribution inside a material by using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. In this study, a current source with maximum current injection capability of 224.7mA, under 1k Omega resistive load is used. Experiments are performed with a 2D uniform phantom, in which a current steering insulator is inserted. Magnetic flux density distributions are measured, and current density images ...
