While technoparks and incubators are physical spaces where entrepreneurial firms are colocated with the expectations that synergies will naturally be borne across them, research looking at the effects of technopark building design characteristics on enabling or hindering these synergies have been scarce and fragmented. Based on Dul’s (2018) framework, we develop a building-level theoretical model to propose that the building’s characteristics (such as functionality, mood, and meaning) will increase opportunities of communication and interaction across the building’s tenant firms. This interaction, in turn, is posited to support the development of social capital within a building, increasing the tenant firms’ innovativeness. The results of pilot study with a number of semi-structured interviews conducted with employees of tenant firms of a major Turkish technopark are reported as a preliminary insight into the validity of the proposed relationship.
