While technoparks and incubators are physical spaces where entrepreneurial firms are colocated with the expectations that synergies will naturally be borne across them, research looking at the effects of technopark building design characteristics on enabling or hindering these synergies have been scarce and fragmented. Based on Dul’s (2018) framework, we develop a building-level theoretical model to propose that the building’s characteristics (such as functionality, mood, and meaning) will increase opportunities of communication and interaction across the building’s tenant firms. This interaction, in turn, is posited to support the development of social capital within a building, increasing the tenant firms’ innovativeness. The results of pilot study with a number of semi-structured interviews conducted with employees of tenant firms of a major Turkish technopark are reported as a preliminary insight into the validity of the proposed relationship.

Physical space matters: developing social capital for innovation in technopark buildings
Horata, Ahmet Melih; Wasti Pamuksuz, Syeda Nazlı; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2019)
While technoparks are physical spaces where entrepreneurial firms are colocated so that synergies will be borne across them, research about the effects of physical spaces on developing synergies has been scarce. Through semi-structured interview data from employees of firms located in a major Turkish technopark (Technopark M), a grounded theory approach is used to explore the impacts of the physical aspects of technopark spaces on interfirm social capital and its impacts on collaboration. An integrated fram...
Innovation, networking and the new industrial clusters: the characteristics of networks and local innovation capabilities in the Turkish industrial clusters
Eraydin, A; Armatli-Koroglu, B (2005-07-01)
Elaborating on the literature on industrial districts, this paper suggests that innovation and networking are the two key issues, which provide the new generation industrial clusters' competitive capacity in the globalization process. The paper presents the findings on the innovative and networking capabilities of the three important industrial clusters of Turkey based on the data collected from the sample firms in each of these industrial clusters through in-depth interviews. The findings clearly show the ...
Collaboration environments for construction: Implementation case studies
Erdogan, Bilge; Anumba, Chimay J.; Bouchlaghem, Dino; Nielsen, Yasemin (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-10-01)
Although emerging technologies offer the construction industry many opportunities for computer supported collaboration environments, the companies adopting these technologies usually fail in achieving the full benefits from their implementations. The reason for this is found to be focusing too much on the technical factors and ignoring or underestimating the factors related to change, implementation, human and organizational factors, and the roles of the management and end users. Each new information techno...
Design Space Exploration of Initial Structural Design Alternatives via Artificial Neural Networks
Yetkin, Ozan; Sorguç, Arzu (2019-09-13)
Increasing implementation of digital tools within a design process generates exponentially growing data in each phase, and inevitably, decision making within a design space with increasing complexity will be a great challenge for the designers in the future. Hence, this research aimed to seek potentials of captured data within a design space and solution space of a truss design problem for proposing an initial novel approach to augment capabilities of digital tools by artificial intelligence where designers...
Critical success factors in enterprise resource planning implementation: case studies of Turkish companies which use Oracle ERP software
Orhan, Berfu; Şen, Tayyar; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2006)
In this thesis success and failure of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations through case studies of three Turkish organizations based on Critical Success Factors (CSFs) is investigated. The main purpose of this thesis is to reveal success and failure stories according to the effects of CSFs in ERP implementations. The case studies are composed of three Turkish organizations from different sectors. The data is gathered through active observations, analysis of project documents and interviews con...
