Short stories are great authentic materials, never out-of-date and easy to be used in one class hour. As Lazar (2003, p.15) indicates a good short story may involve students “in the suspense of unraveling the plot” (p.15). Through this activity, the students can extend not only the story plot but also the suspense in the story in a creative way.

Vanlı, Gökçe; Seferoğlu, Gölge; Department of English Language Teaching (2012)

Examining Two Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Knowledge for Teaching Manipulation of Algebraic Expressions during Lesson Planning and Instruction
Girit Yildiz, Dilek; Akyüz, Didem (2019-11-01)
Teachers use their content and pedagogical content knowledge for teaching algebra. For this reason, the examination of how teachers use this knowledge may help shed light on how students learn algebra, especially in determining why they usually have difficulties. The aim of the current study is to reveal what teachers know, and propose what they actually need to know for teaching the simplification and equivalence of algebraic expressions. The multiple-case study design was used for this study to compar...

Catch a Tiger by the Toe: Modal Hedges in EFL Argumentative Paragraphs
Hatipoğlu, Çiler; Algı, Sedef (2018-08-01)
Writing argumentative paragraphs is challenging even in one's first language (L1) since in order to fulfil their goals writers need to carefully choose among the available metadiscoursive tools and skilfully balance their use. Writing in a foreign language (L2) is even more challenging because language learners are usually familiar only with a limited number of metadiscoursive markers and functions. Therefore, when unsure, these novice L2 writers tend to fall back to old habits and transfer structures from ...
