Assessment of seismic soil liquefaction triggering beneath building foundation systems
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Jeremic, Boris (2012-12-01)
Although there exist some consensus on seismic soil liquefaction assessment of free field level soil sites, estimating liquefaction triggering potential beneath foundations still stays as a controversial and difficult issue. Assessing liquefaction triggering potential under mat foundations requires the estimation of cyclic and static stresses and the state of the soil medium. As part of these studies, conventionally used normalized cyclic demand term, cyclic stress ratio, is to be estimated addressing the s...

Determination of Selected Endocrine Disrupter Compounds at Trace Levels in Sewage Sludge Samples

Simultaneous determination of endocrine disrupter compounds (EDCs), namely diltiazem, progesterone, benzylbutylphthalate (BBP), estrone, and carbamazepine (Cbz) were performed by using high performance LC-electrospray tandem MS. The ultrasound-aided sequential extraction of sludge samples was optimized to increase extraction efficiencies of the analytes; ranging between 93.0-98.3% recovery. The limit of detection values for diltiazem, progesterone, BBP, estrone, and Cbz were found as 0.78, 0.72, 0.24, 0.75,...
Assessment of liquefaction susceptibility of fine grained soils
Pehlivan, Menzer; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Department of Civil Engineering (2009)
Recent ground failure case histories after 1994 Northridge, 1999 Kocaeli and 1999 Chi-Chi earthquakes revealed that low-plasticity silt-clay mixtures generate significant cyclic pore pressures and can exhibit a strain-softening response, which may cause significant damage to overlying structural systems. These observations accelerated research studies on liquefaction susceptibility of fine-grained soils. Alternative approaches to Chinese Criteria were proposed by several researchers (Seed et al. 2003, Bray ...
