This thesis presents acolumn-parallel time to digital converter (TDC) integrated circuit for light detection and ranging (LIDAR)systems. The designis based on direct time-of-flight (dToF) measurement. It is designed to be used with single-photon-avalanche photodiodes (SPAD)arrays. The TDC can measure the time differences up to 1μs with 125ps precision. This TDC design consistsof four main blocks. Acounter, a phase-locked loop (PLL), a delay-locked loop (DLL), and a tapped delay line (TDL) are used togetherto implement fine timing resolution and long-rangeTDC. The counter is used to increase the time difference input range. The PLL multiplies the reference clocksignalfrequency. PLL’s voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is a ring oscillator thathas fourdifferential stages. The outputsof thesedifferential stages have 45-degree phase differences, and it isused to obtain better timing resolution(similar to DLL operation). The TDLis used to achieveafine timing resolution. It contains severalseries delay cells with well-defined delay times. A dedicated DLL adjusts the delay time of the cells. To have lower power consumption, the TDL hasan event-driven architecture. The design is implemented in 180nm CMOS technology. The TDC has 128 columns with 26μm pixel pitch. The least significant bit(LSB)is 125ps,and the resolution is 13bit,the maximum input range resultsin1024ns(150minthedistance). The INL and DNL of the system are+2/-1LSB at maximum. The jitter noise is 8.4ps which is well below 0.5 LSB. The sampling rate is 1MS/s. The powerconsumptionof the system (all the sub-blocks are included)is 20.5mW.

Phase sensitive detection of motor fault signatures in the presence of noise
Akin, Bilal; Toliyat, Hamid; Orguner, Umut; Rayner, Mark (2007-05-05)
In this paper, digital signal processor (DSP)-based phase-sensitive motor fault signature detection is presented. The implemented method has a powerful line current noise suppression capability while detecting the fault signatures. Because the line current of inverter driven motors involve low order harmonies, high frequency switching disturbances, and the noise generated by harsh industrial environment; the real-time fault analyses yield erroneous or fluctuating fault signatures. This situation becomes a s...
Beam Steerable Traveling Wave Meander Line Antenna Using Varactor Diode for X-Band Applications
Gokalp, Nihan; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (2008-07-11)
This paper presents a novel beam steerable meander line antenna with varactor diode for X-band applications. Beam steering has been achieved by loading the arms of the meander line antenna with varactor diodes. The capacitances of the varactor diodes have been controlled by DC bias voltage. Instead of varactor diodes, RF-MEMS variable capacitances can be used to scan the beam. Since the insertion loss of MEMS capacitances are small compared to loss of varactor diodes, use of MEMS capacitors will increase th...
Fully Integrated Ultra-Low Voltage DC-DC Converter with Voltage Quadrupling LC Tank Oscillator for Energy Harvesting Applications
Jayaweera, H. M. P. C.; Tabrizi, Hamed Osouli; Muhtaroglu, Ali (2017-12-02)
This paper presents a novel fully integrated ultra-low voltage DC-DC converter and its multi-stage architecture. DC-DC converter frequency has been analytically derived using model analysis and validated in Cadence environment. The proposed voltage quadrupling LC tank oscillator eliminates the buffer circuits utilized in the traditional DC-DC converter, hence improves the performance metrics such as efficiency and output power capacity. The circuit was designed in 180nm standard CMOS process and was simulat...

Topalli, Kagan; Erdil, Emre; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Demir, Şimşek; Koç, Seyit Sencer; Akın, Tayfun (Elsevier BV, 2009-12-01)
This paper presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of a novel, tunable, dual frequency rectangular slot antenna using RF MEMS technology. The antenna tuning is achieved by electrostatically actuated RF MEMS variable capacitors on a stub. Two different capacitor structures are implemented on the antenna: cantilever type and fixed-fixed beam type. The latter one is not sensitive to the stress on the structural layer and its measurement results agree well with the simulation results. Each antenna is ...
Detailed Noise Analysis of Current-to-Frequency Converters for Precision Analog Accelerometers
Nuzumlali, Omer Lutfi (2016-04-14)
This paper presents a detailed noise analysis of current-to-frequency converters (CFC) for current output precision analog accelerometers. In the proposed method, time domain approach is used instead of frequency domain approach and the standard deviation of the velocity error after a fixed period of time is calculated. The noise analysis demonstrates that the error caused by voltage noises does not increase with time. However, the standard deviation of the error due to the feedback current noise increases ...
