Yirminci yüzyıl, Türkiye’de mimarlık mesleğinin profesyonelleşmesinin yanı sıra meslek güzergahlarının çeşitlenmesine de tanıklık eder. Bu çerçevede hem mimari hem de sanatsal ve endüstriyel seramiğin tasarım ve üretim alanlarında öne çıkan faaliyetleriyle Rebii Gorbon’un meslek hayatı, dönemi içerisinde dikkat çekici bir örnek oluşturur. Bu çalışma, büyük oranda bilinmezliklerle yüklü olan Gorbon’un çok yönlü kariyerini arşiv ve literatür araştırmalarının yanı sıra ailesi, meslektaşları ve öğrencileriyle yapılan sözlü tarih çalışmalarına dayanarak kurmayı, mimarlık ve mimari seramik alanındaki çalışmalarını üretildikleri dönemler bağlamında tartışmayı hedeflemektedir. Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nden 1934’te mezun olan ve yapı üretimi ortamında tasarımcı, uygulayıcı, yüklenici gibi çeşitli rollerle aktif olan Gorbon’un yapılı çevrenin üretimi alanındaki mesleki pratiklerine, yüzyıl ortalarında akademisyenlik ve seramik üreticiliği gibi farklı roller eklemlenir. 1958’de kurduğu Gorbon Seramik Fabrikası ile Türkiye’de seramik tasarımı ve üretimine yatırım yapan ilk isimlerden biri olan Gorbon, 1962-1979 aralığında Devlet Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’nde öğretim üyeliği yapar. Türkiye’de yapı malzemesi üretiminde ciddi sıkıntıların yaşandığı bir dönemde mimari seramik ve özgün duvar panolarının üretiminde rol oynayan Gorbon, Türkiye’de seramik tasarım tarihi, seramiğin mimari yapılarla ilişkisi ve dönemin yapı malzemeleri sektörünün gelişiminde önemli bir aktördür. Türkiye modern mimarlığının üretken ve çok yönlü mimarlarından biri olan Rebii Gorbon’un kariyerindeki serbest mimar, eğitimci, sanatsal ve yapısal seramik üreticisi rolleri aynı zamanda dönemin özgün dinamiklerini anlamayı da olanaklı kılmaktadır.
