Experimental and numerical investigation of ballistic impact behaviour of high strength aluminium plates
Başaran, Güralp; Gürses, Ercan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2019)
A hybrid solution method was used to examine the ballistic collision situation to be used in armored vehicle design. This hybrid solution method includes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a Finite Element (FE) solver. MATLAB was used for ANN model, and LSDYNA® was used as FE solver. For this purpose, first ballistic tests were performed, and projectile residual velocities and depth of penetrations were measured. The FE model was confirmed by ballistic tests. After the FE model validation, FE analyses w...
Effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on cellulose hydrolysis and cellulase activity, and its use for peanut hulls hydrolysis
Öztürk, Eylül; Alpas, Hami; Department of Food Engineering (2019)
High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) technique has potential for food preservation purposes and HHP treatment can inactivate enzymes and/or increase their activity. Avicel, the commercial name of microcrystalline cellulose, is a commonly used substrate to observe the activity of cellulase. Cellulase activity is a crucial parameter for the production of alternative renewable fuels. Celluclast 1.5L, a mixture of enzymes, are used for the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose containing substances. Peanut hull ...
Effects of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) on quality parameters and shelf-life of lager beer
Buzrul, Sencer; Alpas, Hami; Bozoğlu, Faruk; Department of Food Engineering (2003)
Filtered bright and unfiltered hazy lager beer samples were either treated with high hydrostatic pressure (200, 250, 300, 350 MPa for 3, 5 and 10 min at 10°C and 20°C) or conventional heat pasteurization (60°C for 15 min). Treatments did not affect ethanol, extract, fermentation degree, density and pH in comparison with untreated beers. Both treatments produced microbiologically stable products. Bitterness, color, protein sensitivity and chill haze parameters were affected by both the HHP and heat treatment...
Caustic recovery from highly alkaline denim mercerizing wastewaters using membrane technology
Varol, Cihangir; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
Recovery of caustic solution from mercerizing wastewaters of a denim producing textile mill was performed by using membrane technologies. A comprehensive characterization study was conducted to develop the treatment scheme. Highly alkaline and warm condition of wastewater has induced using membranes made of Polyethersulfone (PES). Conducted pretreatment applications such as microfiltration, flocculation and centrifuge have been found unsuccessful to improve further treatment capacities. Hence recovery studi...
Interaction of Intestinal Microbiota and Intestinal Epithelial Health in High Carbohydrate Diet
Ulutaş, Mehmet Sefa; Gültekin, Güzin Candan; Aydın, Aysun Cebeci; Department of Biotechnology (2021-8)
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic inflammatory disorders that cause prolonged inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. In western countries high fat and protein consumption is shown as the main cause of inflammatory bowel diseases. However, traditional Turkish diet heavily relies on carbohydrate-based foods, the incidence of IBD in Turkey is very similar to western countries. We hypothesize that this may be due to high carbohydrate consumption. In the first part of the study, the interactio...
