Samenvatting | The different ways in which positive thinking is manifested in the United States, from psychology to theology and business, are analysed and put in historical contexts. The author argues that the insistence on being cheerful actually leads to a lonely focus inwards, a blaming of oneself for any misfortunes, and thus to political apathy. She observes that cancer patients are asked to think positive and suggests that denial of reality played a role in the recent economic crisis.
