Biographical Note

William R. Stuart, Jr., was born on 18 November 1820 in Centreville, Ketucky, to William R. Stuart (1780-1853) and Ariana (Frazier) Stuart. Stuart's grandparents -- maternal and paternal -- immigrated from Scotland to Maryland. Here, Stuart remained until he was aged twenty years when he made the move to Louisiana, where he engaged in the sugar business and cotton trading. Stuart remained there until 1871, when he moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. While in Mississippi, Stuart worked with livestock and pecan trees and was named "the father of pecan culture in the South" by the Atlanta Constitution. Stuart died in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on 29 March 1894. He is sometimes referred to as Col. William R. Stuart, but according to family accounts, this nickname is most likely an honorary title given to him by a fraternal organization.
