Abstract: This report presents results of a study of the influence of soil strength, tire-inflation pressure, and other factors on the deflection of moving tires. The study was conducted at the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station as part of Corps of Engineers Subproject 8S70-05-001-03, "Mobility Fundamentals and Model Studies" (formerly Subproject 8-70-05-400, "Trafficability of Soils as Related to the Mobility of Military Vehicles"). The tests were made by personnel of the Army Mobility Research Center, Soils Division, under the supervision of Messrs. W. J. Turnbull, S. J. Knight, and D. R. Freitag. Mr. G. c. Downing, of the Waterways Experiment Station Instrumentation Branch, assisted in the design and supervision of construction of the special test instruments and was in charge of the measurement of the deflection data. Mr. A. J. Green, Jr., had the primary responsibility for conduct of the tests and preparation of this report. Director of the Waterways Experiment Station during the course of the investigation and the preparation of this report was Col. Edmund H. Lang, CE. Technical Director was Mr. J. B. Tiffany.
