Abstract
There are a number of physically different realizations of an optical amplifier and yet they all share the same fundamental quantum limit as far as their noise characteristics are concerned. We review the underlying mathematical formalism without the restriction of a minimum number of modes being involved, its physical implications and relate it to the phenomenological models for the various amplifiers.
