Positive interpretations of doctrine and scripture for women affirm that they made in the image and likeness of God. Unfortunately, negative interpretations of doctrine and scripture deny that women are fully made in the image and likeness of God, and are a means to justify the marginalization of women.
The exploration to understand these positive and negative interpretations provides insight into the ways in which they impact women and their role in redemption. The work of feminist theologians is to critique the negative interpretations of doctrine and scripture that deny women as being made fully in the image and likeness of God. In addition, feminist theologians reconstruct a positive and affirming anthropological notion of the atonement for women.
A positive anthropological notion of the atonement for women provides women with representation by Christ, demonstrates that women are fully imago Dei, and that women participate in the process of redemption through the Christian community.
