Abstract
A 7 month old, female spayed, Bernese Mountain dog was referred to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals' Orthopedic Surgery Service for surgical correction of a right lateral patellar luxation (LPL). The patient was initially diagnosed with a right LPL two months prior to presentation by her primary care veterinarian who referred her for definitive surgical treatment. Initial evaluation revealed a right, grade 3/4 LPL, as well as discomfort on hip extension, bilaterally. Radiographs were taken to rule out hip dysplasia and the presence of angular limb deformities that might exacerbate lameness. Additional pathology was ruled out and the patient was discharged with instructions to return for definitive surgical treatment. A classic “four-in-one” corrective surgical procedure was performed to correct the LPL, after which the patient recovered uneventfully. Short term follow-up revealed improving clinical lameness along with radiographically-appropriate healing.
