This study discusses volunteering work in its formal and institutional perspective. The purpose is to show that today volunteering practice is viewed as a rising social phenomenon, promoted in different areas of society and is labeled as a practice of active citizenship, responsible and propitiatory of a social solidarity culture which concerns itself with those that are less fortunate. Simultaneously, we resort to the Maussian perspective about gift, exalting the emergency of a new cycle of personal and social relationships based in the dichotomous obligation of the Give, Receive and Return. In other words, taken as a symbolic practice and minimally materialistic, the gift promotes a new way of being in the interpersonal relationships, summoning a feeling of collective social obligation over the individual interests and material aspect of social exchanges. Therefore, we present the theory basis to question the crisis and the inability of the Government and Markets with the rise of the Third Sector, supported by the economic strength of volunteering as an expression of the gift, meaning, we strive to understand how the gift, as the essence of the volunteering action, advocates a network of socio-economic relations, taken as a Gift Economy, and launch the Third Sector forward towards the spotlight of social, political and economical powers. For a better understanding of the strength of volunteering, as expression of the gift, its weight and part in this new paradigm of social solidarity emerging in the social sector, we present a case study with the Guimarães Delegation of the Portuguese Red Cross, with a sample of 431 volunteers, where we can assess their sociodemographic profile, perceive its determinants, the motivations of their volunteering action and, above all, analyze the importance and relevance of the work streamlined by the volunteers, both in the organization, the implementation of projects and in the social responses developed by the institution. One of the obtained results matches the volunteer profile of the institution which is characterized in its most part by a woman, between 22 and 50 years old, single, with no offspring, with qualifications between high school (secondary school terminology in Portugal) and college education, residing in the urban framework of Guimarães county and with an occupational activity in the health, education and social support areas. It was also assessed that, between 2009 and 2010 the DG CVP (Delegação de Guimarães da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa) developed 30 projects, directly involved 196 volunteers and benefited 1622 persons in the community, mirroring the part of volunteering in the social economy.
