In the present study we investigated the production of consonant segments of Portuguese based on the consultation of a group of sixteen children and adults, speakers of !Khun de Angola, language of the Khoisan family, known for having phonological systems based on click consonants, such as ([ʘ] labial; [ǀ] dental; [ǃ] (post)alveolar; [ǂ] palatoalveolar; [ǁ] alveolar lateral). All participants stated that they do not use Portuguese in their daily lives, nor do they learn it in a conventional education system. Thus, this study aimed to identify the consonant sounds of Portuguese that are produced in a deviant way, through their identification by Portuguese speakers, mother tongue, and to identify the effect of age of onset of learning on !Khun/ San speakers´ability to identify and produce the target segments. Thus, the results reveal that, regardless of the vowel context after the consonant being /a/, /i/ or /u/ and the learner being an adult or a child, the speakers of !Khun were able to produce oral occlusive consonants /b/, /d/, /ɡ/ at almost 100%, but had difficulty producing /n/, /z/, /f/, /v/, /t/, /m/, /p/, /k/, /l/, /R/, /s/, /ʃ/ e /ʒ/. |
