The aim of the project is to provide people from various backgrounds (speakers and their political representatives, developers of educational material, NGO's, language planners, linguists and anthropologists) with a database of the Yurakaré language that can serve a variety of purposes, even purposes we do not foresee at this moment. The database aims in the first place at documenting the Yurakaré language in all its diversity, but it will also include data that give an idea of the context of the language: personal histories, illustrations of everyday practices, Yurakaré testimonies about their own situation and the challenges they are facing today. In this manner we want to build a database that not only includes linguistic material, but that also tries to embed these data in the larger context of the current Yurakaré society.
Rik van Gijn Jeremías Ballivián Rik van Gijn Rik van Gijn Rik van Gijn Rik van Gijn Discourse Narrative Unspecified speech Aysa semi-interactive semi-spontaneous non-elicited Unspecified Monologue Face to Face ISO639-3:yuz Yurakaré false true Unspecified Yurakaré is an unclassified language, spoken by a small indigenous group that lives in the foothill area of the Andes in central Bolivia. There are no reliable figures to date for the number of speakers, but most estimates revolve around 2500. Even though there are slight local variations between communities, these differences do not permit an internal dialect classification. The Yurakaré language is in danger of becoming extinct. The youngest generation has a (mostly weak) passive knowledge of the language, but they no longer speak it. Parents usually converse with them in Spanish. Furthermore, speakers of the generation of 20-30 year olds have a tendency to use Spanish rather than Yurakaré, even amongst themselves.
