Kazahkstan is the home of approximately 130 different ethnic groups, 26 of which are Turkic. The project-related research focuses on the interaction of languages and cultures of these Turkic peoples. A nationwide survey is carried out in Kazakhstan in order to collect information on self-identification, language use, the attitude towards education in the mother-tongue, the historic aspects of the settlement (such as deportation), interethnic relationships, the maintenance of the specific culture, and the role of religion. All the collected information is stored in our project database on the project homepage; the users’ interface is being created in order to search and filter the data according to various criteria and to visualize the search results. Moreover, we are recording and analysing speech samples of these Turkic languages, focusing on oral literature and autobiographic narrations. These recordings will be stored not only in our own database, but also at the language archive of the Max-Planck-Institute in Nijmegen to make it accessible for researches worldwide. Within the project, they serve as a basis for folkloristic and ethnographic investigations and comparative studies. Another target of the project is to develop autonomous research capacities at the cooperating universities in Kazakhstan, and to implement the results within their teaching schedules.
