Abstract
This paper outlines a project in which the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Maps and Images
database was modified to create a geolibrary. The facility to store spatial data was added to the
database and a web-based graphical user interface was created to display dynamic graphic indices of
map series. A spatial search was also build into the user interface that allows the user to retrieve all
maps that cover a point that can be entered in coordinates, using a placename, or by clicking on the
basemap. The system created combines functionality and usability to produce a simple system with
a powerful spatial search capacity.
