Abstract: The present study has as central subject the formation of group Teatro Oficina of São Paulo in a context of modern theater professionalization in the city of São Paulo. It focuses on aspects of the group performance between 1958, the year of its formation, and the year 1964, when Teatro Oficina become a professional group and reacts, through theater, to the brazilian social context after the advent of military coup of 1964. To do this, it is intended to examine this phenomenon from the photographs of two theatrical productions of this group: A incubadeira (1959), by José Celso Martinez Corrêa, representative of the group's success in its early amateur period, and Andorra (1964), by Max Frisch, that marks an important moment of aesthetic and political positioning, noticeable through the photographs of the stage production. The photographs of both plays show the presence of the public, which is here noted as an important element to be analyzed from the cultural and political issues being debated in Brazil the years 1950-60. To better infer the relationship between photography and theater it is proceeded to an analytic temporal return, so to understand changes in the rhetorical focus of the photographs of the theater in São Paulo during the first half of twentieth century, working the analysis of the differences of these images and understanding the semantics behind the emphasis in certain photographic frames. Thereby, it was woven a narrative were the history of photography and the history of theater walked intertwined in order to pursue the research results through the analysis of the uses of the photography by the theater, the history of theater photographs and the meanings of the contents portrayed (forms, context and semantics). For this, there were necessary three theoretical directions for structuring the research: the analysis of the photographs, the close relations between the concepts of aesthetics and politics, the exploration of the new research paths of the New Cultural History, which make possible working with documentary sources yet little explored by historian of the theater.
