Abstract: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the histological effects of portal. Hypertension of small intestine in rats. Portal hypertension was induced in a group of 45 rats through partial portal vein ligation. There was a control group, of 15 rats which underwent sham operation. A group of rats underwent second surgery after 15 days, a second group after 30 days, and a third group after 60 days, where the portal pressure was measured and histological specimens were collected from the duodenum, jejunum, ileum and liver for morphological analysis. Portal hypertension was consistently established in the thre groups. The histological review showed large submucosa edema with the loosening of the basal layer and of the corium, besides statistically significant morphological changes in the mucosal, muscularis and serosal layers. The study came to the conclusion that portal hypertension leads to morphological changes in all the layers of the small intestine. It is inferred that these changes may contribute to the occurrence of malnutrition in patients with portal hypertension.
