Abstract: The present monographic work has as main objective the realization of a historical search for the roots of the drug prohibition policy in Brazil. To this end, a bibliographic review was carried out to identify the first human relationships with psychoactive substances and the respective official and unofficial reactions on the issue. At first, the influence of the Christian culture of the time was identified, which served as a filter to guarantee the cultural assimilation of certain substances and not others. In this light, the slavery policy that has persisted in our country for years was also an element that greatly influenced the construction of the current criminal drug policy in Brazil, with reflexes that are still felt today. The institutionalization and bureaucratization of this policy of repression was related to international interference in Brazil, especially from the United States, which guided the way in which interventions in the field of "drugs" would take place throughout the 20th century. It is from that moment that the medical and health discourse starts to serve as a justifying element, which is also repeated until today. The work concludes with the indication of possible historical elements that can still be felt in the current criminal drug policy.
